Sedro Woolley is a small town in Washington County, Oregon. It is located on the banks of the Willamette River, about 25 miles east of Portland. The population was 1,542 at the 2000 census. The town was named for Sedro Woolley, an early settler and namesake of the wool industry in Oregon. In 1853, woolen fabric production began in Sedro Woolley and continued until 1922 when it merged with nearby Beaverton to form Beaverton-Sedro Woolley Township. The name's meaning has been variously interpreted - one version says "sedge bank" because there were many sedges near the river's edge at that time; another says "woollen hound" because early residents were known for owning dogs that produced high-quality wool; still others say it means "pleasant place to live." Woolley had a post office from 1854 to 1902. It ceased operations due to mail delivery being moved toPortland during World War I. The first store opened in 1875 and later became a school district store before closing its doors permanently in 1946 after 35 years operation. Today Sedro Woolley functions as a bedroom community for the larger towns of Beaverton and Portland located less than two miles away. Most people who live here are retirees or children growing up in families who have lived here all their lives (or some parents living alone). There are also several dozen farmers who provide much needed food for local restaurants and grocery stores as well as providing jobs for locals during planting seasons around May through October when haymaking takes place on nearby hillsides adjacent to the riverbank where sheep are kept during winter months while their lambs are born and weaned onto feed given by their mothers prior to moving into pens set aside specifically for this purpose near Interstate 5 exit 20A). Sedro Woolley, Washington is a small town in Douglas County and the seat of Sedro Woolley Borough. The population was 1,491 at the 2010 census. It is located on the east side of Sedro Woolley Lake. The Sedro Woolley Police Department was established on October 1, 1881. The department's first officer was Charles Hargrave who served until December 3, 1881 when George Fenton became Officer in Charge. On February 24, 1903 Charles Waddell was appointed Police Chief and served until his death in 1907. On July 1, 1911 the department moved to its current location at 5th Avenue and Welton Road NW with Sergeant John Ahern as its first captain. In 1951 Captain Harry Larkin took over command from Captain Larkin and remained in that position until his retirement on January 31, 1958. Lieutenant Edward Jorma then succeeded Lieutenant Jorma as captain from October 26, 1988 to May 14, 1990 while also serving as Detective Sergeant for two years; he left after being promoted to detective sergeant rank effective November 15, 1988. Assistant Chief Edward Weisman took over command effective May 14 1990 until his retirement on October 9 1998 after more than 20 years with the department including 10 years as head of detectives bureau which also included five years as acting police chief due to Mayor David Chase’s illness absence; assistant chief Weisman retired effective December 5 1998 having led the department through several changes including introduction of body camera program and establishment of a citizen’s review board which is still in effect today
