The Spokane Army National Guard has a rich history dating back to the early days of the United States. The unit was formed in 1861 as the 2nd Regiment Washington Infantry (1st Infantry Brigade), and served in many conflicts, including the American Civil War. In 1898, when Spokane became part of Washburn County, Territorial Militia units were reorganized into an army regiment under US General Joseph Hooker. The 1st Regiment Washington Infantry was redesignated as your 1st Infantry Regiment on October 16, 1898. On February 11, 1907, your regiment was again redesignated as the 7th Infantry Regiment (Washington) when it became one of two infantry regiments within what would become the 82nd Airborne Division. World War II began with Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor and ended with Japan's surrender in 1945. Part of Spokane’s proud military heritage is its service during World War II - from providing troops for Operation Downfall through to service in Occupation Japan. During that time our unit sustained numerous losses including twenty-six killed and seventy-eight wounded in action; however we persevered and continue to serve today as part of the Spokane National Guard! Spokane, Washington is a city in the U.S. state of Washington, located in the Spokane metropolitan area. As of the 2010 census, the population was 295,702. The first permanent European settlers in what is now Spokane were French Jesuit missionaries who arrived in 1792 and founded Fort Nez Perce near present-day Spokane Falls. In 1847, the United States acquired most of western Montana from Mexico through Treaty 7 and established the Dakota Territory including Spokane County as part of it. In 1855, when Territorial District No. 3 was created within Dakota Territory to encompass all of eastern Montana not already belonging to Canada because of geographical features such as Idaho's Boise River and Wyoming's Snake River, Spokane was added to that district; its current boundaries were set at its southern edge by Canadian territory then known as North Western Montana (now parts of Oregon and Wyoming). The city has grown rapidly since then: It became an incorporated municipality on February 14, 1912; its full name is City of Spokane (and sometimes spelled "Spokane" or "Spokane Valley"); and it has been governed continuously by a mayor/council form since 1907 despite having no governing body until 1959. The largest employer in the city is American Electric Power Company with over 50 percent employment within the municipal limits; other large employers include Northern Pacific Railway Company (which operates local railways) and Eastern Washington University (a private university). In recent years, some residents have voiced concern about gentrification—the influx of wealthier people into neighborhoods around downtown—though this has not resulted in any major changes on the part of Mayor Michael McGinnis or his councilmembers
