The history of the Coast Guard in Spokane, Washington began with the establishment of a local militia in 1855. The first Coast Guard detachment was stationed at Fort Defiance until 1861 when it was transferred to Seattle. In 1866, the first officers in charge of the Coast Guard were appointed and duties were expanded to include guarding shipping lanes and protecting inland waterways. In 1888, the Coast Guard Station at Yarrow Point was moved from Seattle to Spokane. By 1912, the station had been renamed Pacific Beach and its tasks became more generalized including patrols along both coasts as well as search and rescue operations during storms. On January 1, 1913, all shore stations except for Pacific Beach were disbanded and their functions absorbed by the newly created United States Coast Guard District #4 based in Olympia. At that time, there were only 12 coast guard personnel serving in Spokane. In 1938, Chief Petty Officer John Fenton took over command of Unit 3 located at Terminal Island which had been closed since 1933 due to budget cuts caused by World War II. From 1938-1940 Unit 3 assisted with clearing navigation channels following severe waves caused by winter storm Dorian which killed dozens of people on Puget Soundshore housesboat projects. In 1942-1943 Chief Petty Officer Tom Cook commanded Unit 3 during Operation Neptune’s Spear which saw Japanese forces invade Hawaii; this was one of the most intense bombing campaigns during World War II and many homes sustained damage or were destroyed while troops fought ashore around Kaneohe Bay Naval Air Station (KBA). The Spokane Coast Guard Auxiliary was founded in 1917 as the Spokane Navy Yard Reserve. In 1924, the Coast Guard Auxiliary purchased the land at Kanawha Landing where it stands today and began building its first station- the Forebay Landing Station. The present facility opened in 1951 and is one of two Coast Guard stations located in Spokane. In 1974, the Coast Guard Auxiliary moved from their original location to its current location on McNeil Boulevard near First Avenue South. After being abandoned during World War II due to lack of funds, Harrison was reactivated in 1949 as a Veterans Affairs Medical Center hospital and remains so today; Harrison also serves as one half mile (1 km) northeast cornering Tripp Avenue at North Meridian Street near Interstate 90/US 395 interchange

During World War II, many businesses closed due to wartime rationing but post-war reconstruction saw an increase in business activity thanks to increased housing demand and expansion into new neighborhoods such as Northgate and Southcenter
