Spokane is located in the Western United States and has been a city since 1959. The city is named after Spokanee, a Sioux chief who helped found the area in the late 1800s. Spokane became an incorporated municipality on December 3, 1959. The history of Spokane begins with white settler James Irvine coming to the area in 1848. He founded what would become Spokane County and named it for his native Scotland. In 1854, John Sutter arrived from California and built his ranch near present-day Spokane Falls. Sutter was one of the first people to inhabit what is now Spokane Valley. A mill built by David Rice in 1862 soon became one of the most important businesses in town. The mill operated until 1865 when it burned down due to a fire that started while workers were building a new dam on the South Fork of Mission Creek. In 1867, James Wahlquist developed land west of town and began selling lots to settlers. By 1870, Wahlquist had erected two large adobe buildings which still stand today – called Wahlquist Hall and Wahlquist Store – as part of his commercial enterprise known as Centralia Gold Mines Corporation (later marketed as Northern Pacific Railway). During this time period, other businesses also began developing around Centralia including lumberyards and breweries; these businesses are still active today within central Spokane Township limits. In 1898, Native Americans led by Chief Joseph Blackhand raided wagon trains traveling throughcentral Washington Territory searching for food sources during drought conditions caused by climate change on the continentwide Great Lakes region at that time experiencing record lows for water levels according to scientific reports at that timeprior to European exploration which then linked those low water levels back east vialand bridges across Lake Michigan . Spokane was founded by the Spokane tribe in 1853. The city was named after General George Armstrong Custer, who died in 1876 at the age of 25 in a battle with Native Americans. After the Battle of Little Bighorn, Union troops made their way to Spokane and burned everything they found, including the homes of some of Custer's friends. In 1881, Spokane became part of Washington Territory and laterOklahoma Territory. The city experienced rapid growth during its early years as a result of its location on the Snake River and access to timber resources. However, as Spokane grew more populous and industrialized, it began to experience problems with crime and pollution. In1965, Spokane became an incorporated city under the name "Spokane."
