Spokane is a city in Washington, United States. The population was estimated to be over 100,000 at the 2010 census. Spokane is the sixth-largest city in Northwest America. It is bordered by Seattle to the south, Puget Sound to the west, and Yakima County to the north and east. The city was founded in 1871 as a logging town on Lake Spokane by Captain George Spalding and his brother-in-law, Capt. James Fenton. In 1902 it became an incorporated municipality with a population of 25,000 people. Spokane became an official U.S. city on January 15, 1907. Spokane has been known for its agricultural products since before white settlers arrived in what is today Spokane County: wheat and other cereal crops were grown from around 1810 until 1865; potatoes began being produced in larger quantities about 1840; apples started to be harvested in earnest about 1860; and then came hops (the first commercial crop) about 1870–75). The City of Spokane also cultivated tobacco for export beginning in 1795 (a practice which continued into the 1800s). Spokane, Washington is a city in the U.S. state of Washington, located in the Spokane Peninsula region of the west-central part of the state. The population was 258,717 at the 2010 census, making it the sixth most populous city in Washington. The first resident to set foot on Spokane's current site was George Vancouver in 1853. Spokane had been platted as a town by Territorial Governor Isaac Stevens and named after General David Hunter's home county of Monmouthshire, England. By 1870 there were over 30 businesses operating in downtown Spokane with 100 homes…. In 1886 a water tower/pump station/power plant/water line extension connected to Puget Sound via an 8 miles long pipeline supplying Tacoma…. Market Street between First Avenue NE and Broadway SW became known as "the crowded thoroughfare" due to its high concentration of business enterprises…. Many new residences were built during this period including: Norwegian Reformed Church (now South Main Street NW), Empress Hotel & Casino (now Third Avenue SE), Griggs Building (now East Broad Street SE), Masonic Temple (now Pinnacle Tower), Pioneer Monument & Museum (formerly South Park Mall)…." In 1914 Spirit Lake Dam was completed downstream creating Eastern Columbia River Basin National Wildlife Refuge which included much area around town including today’s Cascade Mountains parkland adjacent to I-90 exit 6 off State Route 516 southwesterly Boundary Road—the only accessible route into or out of town other than Interstate 90….. When World War II began military activity increased along river front as docks were developed for storage vessels used by Naval Base Newsome east of town….. Businesses grew rapidly again following war termination with returning servicemen and their families…… After decades without major development most Downtown businesses closed during late 1990s recession……………………………………….. By 2000 most businesses having vacated moved out or been acquired by others……………………………………….. In recent years many residents have returned Downtown contenting themselves with small shops lining MarketStreet near Water Tower replacement building housing community center
