When the United States entered World War II, Spokane was one of the cities quickly eager to help. The Spokane Airport, built in 1939 and enlarged in 1942 for military use, became a vital player in Washington’s wartime mobilization. In 1941, the city set up an Army Air Forces recruitment station at the airport and began sending recruits westward. The U.S.Army Air Corps recruited more than 2,500 men from Spokane during World War II. The airport played a significant role in Northwest defense as well. The Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress bombers used by the United StatesAAF were based at Spokane while they were being assembled and test flown;[1] this allowed Spokane residents to have a firsthand experience with these powerful aircraft and keep their skills sharp as they prepared for war. The airport also played a critical role in training pilots for later roles in the USAF;[2] after the war, many of those veterans who flew out of Spokane went on to become professional aircrews or managers within their hometowns.
