The Spokane National Guard was organized on February 14, 1912. The first national guard unit in Spokane was the 1st Battalion of the Spokane Citizens’ Volunteer Militia. In 1916, the National Guard moved to an barracks at 10th and Broadway which served as the Armory for the city’s militia until 1918 when it moved to what is now CenturyLink Field. From its beginnings as a volunteer militia, the Spokane National Guard has grown into one of Washington’s leading organizations. With over 120 years of history, the Spokane National Guard is a vital part of our community and our country. Today, the park Rangers provide security and protection for people in downtown Spokane and throughout rural areas around town. Additionally, there are several thousand military veterans who have served in both World War I and World War II with distinction within our organization.
