American Legion Post No 871 sponsored a yearly golf tournament at Ft Meade until 1959 when it moved to Pinehurst Course on nearby McChord Air Force Base because of its high altitude springs water supply[1]. In 1954 Ft Meade hosted an international trade fair known as "Exposition '54" which attracted more than 250 exhibitors from around the world including Russia,[2] Mexico City[3], and Hong Kong.[4] In 1957 Ft Meade hosted "An International Automobile Show", one of North America's first major auto shows.[5] From 1958 to 1962 Ft Meade served as home to both Naval Surface Warfare Center (now Naval Air Station Patuxent River) and Headquarters United States Navy Mediterranean Fleet before becoming an inactive naval station again in 1971[6]. In 1861–1862, John Hanks platted what is now central Sunnyside along Mound Street; this area became known as Hanksville after him. In 1865–1866, Fenton Morrison built a log cabin on what is now northeast corner of Pioneer Boulevard and Sunrise Highway (now part of I-5). This cabin served as the nucleus for what would become Sunnyside Elementary School—the first school in SunnysIDE In 1870s construction began on what would become Western Pacific Railroad's line through Yakima Valley; this line led eventually to Seattle
