Sunnyside is located east of Seattle on State Route 184 and north of Everett. It is bordered by Mount Rainier National Park to the south and east and Lake Sammamish to the west. The community was named forsunshine, an early settler's perception of what it would be like living near Puget Sound without all the humidity and cloud cover that comes with living in Hawaii or Southeast Asia. Sunnyside began as a small farming community during prohibition era in the 1920s when many farmers abandoned prohibitionist values in order to make money from alcohol sales. etta was first built on land donated by Mrs. Prentice Smeaton (1892-1976) who also founded Sunnyside Elementary School in 1930 as part of her effort to build schools around Puget Sound area communities which had been neglected since prohibition ended two years earlier. In 1951, Mrs. Smeaton added a second elementary school building (now Sunnyside Middle School), which served as both a high school for students grades 7-12 and also served as home for the town's post office until it moved to its current site in 1975 adjacent to Everett High School after it closed down in nearby Maple Hill Elementary School. The originalSunnyside Post Office operated from 1951-1975 from a log cabin on NE 182nd Ave which housed offices for Wizards Post #2 before becoming home to Everett High School starting in 1975; eventually serving students from nearby Maple Hill ElementarySchool as well adding classes for grades 9-12 before closure in 2007 due to budget cuts). In 1990, statehood led by then Governor Christine Gregoire provided impetus for development at Sunnyside with plans calls for creating new housing developments including single family homesites along eastern edge of Golf Course Road while retaining existing businesses including several banks but no new malls or shopping areas were developed beyond that initial plan until now with recent expansions leading up downtown redevelopment planned there known collectively as "Sunny Side Square". Downtown redevelopment has included addition of several large mixed use buildings totaling over 100,000 square feet along 2 blocks extending northeastWARWICK STREET & SUNNY side SQUARE - this project is currently under construction & should begin property annexation process soon!
The first Europeans to settle in Sunnyside were the Dutch in 1636. The area was part of British Columbia and when it became a U.S. Territory, the name "Sunnyside" was given to the community by Congress as an honor for its new location on the Washington side of the Columbia River. The name stuck and today's residents are descendants of those original settlers. In 1853, Sunnyside erected a small wooden depot to store goods coming downriver from Oregon. By 1870, businesses had started up around what is now the depot and a post office was established. In 1876, local citizens built a schoolhouse which still stands today in downtown Sunnyside. In 1907, Sunnyside incorporated as a town under state law and soon began expanding beyond its original boundaries into present-day Seattle neighborhoods like South Park and Northgate. In 1912, Sunnyside annexed much of Ballard Township including Queen Anne’s School (now Greenwood Elementary School). This annexation made Sunnyside one of Seattle’s largest municipalities at that time with over 20,000 residents! By 1920, there were already over 40 businesses in town and growth continued until World War II when many people left for military service or took jobs in Seattle during wartime efforts such as munitions production. However, by 1945 all but two businesses had closed down due to war-time competition from other American cities like Tacoma and Everett. The post office closed in 1951 after more than 50 years serving Sunnyside residents primarily through mail order catalogues sent out from stored materials at the old depot site on Seventh Avenue South near Pacific Street East. Today only memories remain of past postal services here – various pieces of hardware once stored inside rusting metal drums outside current day Seventh Avenue South entrance – reminder that even now some things never change!
