Sunnyside is a census-designated place in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 8,642 at the 2010 census. Sunnyside is located on the north bank of the Duwamish River. It is bordered by Bellevue to the east and south, Redmond to the north and west, and Bothell to the northwest. The name "Sunnyside" was given in 1887 when it was part of Seattle Township. The first permanent settler in Sunnyside was John Waddell who arrived in 1851. He named his tract Sunnyside after his sun-drenched home on Snohomish Lake. Waddell's land included what is now Sunnyside Road and portions of present day Interstate 590. By 1865, John Purdy had built a small log cabin on what is now Naito Parkway which he called "Purdy's Park". In 1876 Josephine Beattie purchased land from Waddell for $15 per acre and began construction on her large brick farmhouse which she named "Beattie House". Beattie became one of Seattle's most influential women during her lifetime and left behind an important legacy inSunny Side history including several schools (including South High School), numerous churches (including Oneida Presbyterian Church), a post office (1889), a park (1901), two hospitals (1906 & 1907) and over 100 homes/condos/townhouses. In 1912, developer Adolphus Greeley subdivided much of suburban King County into blocks that would be sold off piecemeal with different names such as Sunrise Beach or North Shore Estates etc.. Greeley decided that Sunnyside should receive its own name which it did upon becoming a municipality within King County in 1915. At that time there were only 38 residents living within Sunnysides borders making it one of the smallest municipalities ever created in Washington State! However due to its location between Bellevue to the east and Redmond to the north and west as well as Bothell to the northwest SUNNYSIDE has managed to maintain some degree of local control even as annexation by other municipalities has occurred throughout its history! For example since 1964 when Bothell incorporated as a city SUNNYSIDE has continued to have representation on both its City Councilmember seats along with having access to funding from various agencies like Sound Transit!! Today Sunnyside remains an active center for business with many high tech companies locating here such as Microsoft, Amazon Web Services & Oracle Corporation among others There are also several restaurants / cafes located within walking distance including Cafe de la Musique & Chop Suey respectively As well as several stores providing everything from hardware sales to appliances! In 1978, development began on what would become CenturyLink Field, one of the largest sports stadiums in North America. As part of this project, Sunnyside lost its status as a small rural community and became part of a larger metropolitan area.
