The community was named for sunnyside on a small river near its location in what is now downtown Sunnyside and was founded by farmers who wanted to name their new town after a sunny day outside. The first post office opened in 1892, and by 1907 it had grown so large that it decided to move from its original location on the east side of town (just north of where Interstate 5 crosses the Willamette River) to what is now Sunnyside's west side. The name "Sunny Side" stuck and has continued to be used ever since as an unofficial descriptor for the area around town center where most people live or work. In 1985, Sunnyside voters passed a proposition asking for annexation into Portland; however, Portland refused because they felt that annexed towns should have more say in their own governance than those living within them. In 2001, when Oregon passed Proposition 11 which granted voting rights to residents of unincorporated municipalities within Oregon over 25% of population regardless of tax status (in effect since 2000), Sunnyside voted not to annex intoPortland but did pass an ordinance stating that "No municipality . . . shall be created without voter approval." In 2007-2008 there were rumors that developers were planning on building a high school and other amenities in Sunnyside; nothing came of this until 2009 when plans were unveiled once again for development along I-5 just south of town center which would have affected much larger portions of both Sunnysides' neighborhoods including residential areas east and west of the highway along with businesses adjacent thereto including several grocery stores and two restaurants also closer to Interstate 5 than currently exists today while also impacting agricultural land use significantly away from downtownSunnyside Avenue running through both neighborhoods would be completely destroyed making it difficult or impossible for anyone even remotely interested in developing these lands without prior consultation or consent from each respective neighborhood's leaders thus putting significant pressure on each individual leader/community members before anything actually happens during any given year
