It lies on the east side of Seattle and is bordered by Sunnyside Heights to the north, East Link Street to the east, and Auburn Hills to the south. The first people known to live in Sunnyside were Hudson's Bay Company traders and their families who came here in droves during the 18th century as they explored what is now King County. After land purchases from Moses Lake and others, Pioneer John Colville arrived in 1792 with his family and began trading here with local Indians. He named part of this area "Sunny Side" after his sun farm on Vancouver Island where he grew crops for export. The first house built on Sunnyside Hill was built by Major James McKay between 1798-1800. By 1811 it had been replaced by a log cabin used as a military post until it burned down in 1860 while under renovation by Captain George Preston Smythe (1793-1868). The present day name of Sunnyside comes from an early settler's daughter's name which was Sunshine (Aurora) because she could see so brightly when her father took her out for walks near Sunrise Point on Bainbridge Island. In 1881 following annexation of Snohomish County, sunlight became KINGDOM OF WASHINGTON – & SUNNY SIDE became "SUNNY SIDE." Starting around 1910 there was a great deal of development taking place along East Link Street due to its location close to downtown Seattle and its easy access to transportation including buses that stopped right outside the door of many businesses along ELink Street during those years! This growth led also to some new housing being erected along East Link Street such as: The Park View Apartments (1910), One Stop Shopping Village (1920), Arrowsmith House (1925), Sunrise Towers I & II (1927-28), North Park Place( 1930) & South Park Place( 1934). These buildings are all still standing today with updated designs and names reflecting their respective eras/locations!
