Sunnyside, Washington is a small town in King County, Washington. The population was 1,723 at the 2010 census. Sunnyside is located on the east side of Seattle and is bordered by Redmond to the north, Issaquah to the east, and North Bend to the south. The first permanent settler in Sunnyside was Nicholas Haggerty in 1859. He and his family built a log cabin on what is now Main Street. A post office was named Sunnyside after Mr. Haggerty in 1872. In 1888, James Ewing started farming at what is now Payne Road and moved his equipment there from Renton. In 1896 he donated land to form Sunnyside Park which still exists today as a public park with tennis courts, playgrounds, and a pond. In 1924 Harry Chandler began growing grapes on property adjacent to present-day Sunnyside Elementary School; this became one of Northwest's most successful grape crops up until 1990 when yields began declines due to weather conditions such as freezes and hail storms. In 1940 John Kapp bought out Harry Chandler's share of the grapes business; Kapp continued growing grapes until his death in 1984). From 1948 through 1951 Sunnyside Consolidated School District No.(now King County) opened an auto shop on Payne Road called "Kapp Brothers Auto Shop." The shop closed around 1979 but left behind evidence including parts bins for several cars that are still found today at nearby Maplehurst Drive Estate near Bellevue Avenue NE., where they were used as part of construction for John Kapp Jr.'s new home during the late 1980s/early 1990s (the site has since been sold). In 1956 businessman Ray Atchison leased lands adjoining Sunnyside Park from Moses Lake Tribe so he could build a development called "Atchison Place" which eventually became known as South Lake Union across Puget Sound (South Lake Union refers to village located south of Seattle - it never formed part of Sunny Side). Many famous people lived or worked here including Microsoft founder Bill Gates and Hollywood star Bruce Willis who filmed some scenes for Die Hard here before moving back home to California later that year! A large shopping center was planned but never built because of financial difficulties caused by suburbanization during the late 1970s/early 1980s throughout King County (then Seattle) - see: South Lake Union Development Corporation bankruptcy case #87-CV-0010 . When developers bought about half of SouthLakeUnion in 1992 they restored much older buildings within walking distance (including Msgr./Church Administrator's House), reopened the schoolhouse & church plus added new athletic fields & community pool area making it one of Seattle's most vibrant neighborhoods (& finally annexed into city limits sometime between 1994-'97!). Today many families live & raise their children within minutes'walking distance while also enjoying many local businesses specializing in everything from antique stores (& old streetcars!) TO yummy Ethiopian food!
Sunnyside, Washington is a town in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 1,859 at the 2010 census. Sunnyside is part of the Seattle–Tacoma metropolitan area. It lies on the eastern edge of Lake Sammamish and is bordered by Issaquah to the east, Auburn to the north-west, Bothell to the south-east and Monrovia to the west. The first Europeans to visit what is now Sunnyside were members ofCaptain George Vancouver's Discovery Expedition in 1792. They named it "Nisqually" after an Indian Chief who lived near them on Nisqually Island. The first permanent settler in Sunnyside was John Ladd who arrived in 1854. He built a log cabin and started a small farm; he later became mayor of Seattle. In 1870 Captain Abraham Cushing discovered oil shale near Sunnyside and began production which led to increased development around Sunnyside. In 1907 Sunnyside voters approved annexation by Seattle as part of a larger plan called annexations for Everett, Lynnwood and other towns within King County that year; however this annexation did not take place until 1909 because King County officials desired more control over those towns' finances and boundary lines than was given under the original annexation plan On July 14, 1916 aircraft from Boeing Field bombed both Tacoma Municipal Airport (now Sea-Tac International Airport)and nearby Snohomish County Agricultural Center killing 16 people and injuring 100+. This event has been cited as one of America's largest air disasters ever . After World War II there were many efforts to redevelop Sunnysides hilly neighborhoods into more affordable housing opportunities but these have typically failed due to low population densities in these areas In 1984 Microsoft received US$825 million for its new campus located adjacent to Snohomish county beach - intended primarily for high technology jobs but also including some retail space - making it one of the biggest deals ever made outside Northwest America at that time . However only about 10% of this land actually housed Microsoft employees when they moved in while most of their housing remained empty or deteriorated over time
