Sunnyside, Washington is a census-designated place in Clark County, Washington, United States. The population was 1,561 at the 2010 census. Sunnyside is located east of Seattle on the football field of Mount Rainier University. It straddles the border of both Clark and Thurston counties. The first settler in Sunnyside was John Day in 1853. He named his land for General James Kappes sunnah (a practice among Muslims to name their properties after saints or prophets). The town site was surveyed by George Stephenson in 1858 and built by him and his family on land purchased from David Wilcox. In 1860, William Fenton laid out a new town charter that designated Sunnyside as "the most important center of industry and trade". Sunny Side railroads were built through the area starting in the 1870s; one served as an artery east to Seattle while another ran west to Tacoma. By 1886, the Tacoma Junction Railroad had reached Sunnyside with its main line running south from Tacoma to Everett via Gold Lake Road and Northumberland Avenue before branching off near what is now Pioneer Square. A junction station was also built at present day Third Ave SE & Sneath Way NE in 1907 when Sound Transit began service betweenSeattle and Tacoma mainline stations using steam locomotives over a short distance within walking distance of each other on two narrow gauge tracks paralleling each other just north of Pioneer Square where trains stopped for passengers to get refreshments before continuing their journey northwest along either track towards downtown Seattle or northeast towards Olympia.
