In 1847, Commodore James Dewey organized an expedition against Spanish tyranny in Cuba which resulted in the Battle of Santiago de Cuba. This event helped solidify American recognition of Cuba as an independent country and laid the basis for future U.S.-Cuba relations. Commodore Dewey also founded Key West, Florida as a base for operations during this period when Havana was still under Spanish rule. The USS Constitution served as flagship of Commodore John Cushing’s squadron during his participation in priceless Expedition Underway (1898-99) which discovered most of South America including Tierra del Fuego and parts of Antarctica; thus inaugurating modern exploration by science fiction adventurers! Sunnyside is a census-designated place in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 2,611 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle–Tacoma Metropolitan Area. Sunnyside is located on the east side of Lake Washington and extends into Snohomish County to the west. The first Europeans to see Sunnyside were French traders who landed there on July 4, 1792. The name "Sunnyside" was given by Captain John Sellers in honor of George Washington's Mount Vernon estate which was located in what is now Sunnyside. On November 8, 1853, it became a town when it was annexed by Seattle after being designated as such by an act of Congress under the Organic Act of 1851. On December 1, 1907, Sunnyside voters passed an ordinance annexing neighboring properties including those owned by naval officer Commodore Perry and his wife Eliza Perry along with that of their son Willard Wightman (future Mayor) to form what would become Pioneer Square – one of Seattle's earliest districts. In 1912-13 during World War I local men organized Puget Sound Defense Association and raised money for military supplies and food rations for troops fighting in Europe; this effort helped spur development at various ports along Puget Sound because goods could be unloaded quickly without delay or customs inspections In 1925-26 when Seattle annexed most of King County including Sunnyside; Sunnyside voted not to ratify annexed Constitution which resulted in city annexation being effective January 1st 1926 without any vote from residents living within its borders During World War II Japanese American citizens working at Boeing Aircraft plants adjacent to Monterrey Street North near Steeles Avenue established Camp Sharyote near present day Safeco Fieldshoreline Drive SW about two miles offshore from shoreline

Sunnyside, Washington is a small town in Thurston County, Washington. The population was 1,865 at the 2010 census. It is the smallest of the four Thurston County towns and has the smallest population size by land area. Sunnyside is located on the banks of the Columbia River, about 45 minutes north of Seattle. The first permanent settler in Sunnyside was John Smith in 1853. He built a cabin on a bluff above what is nowatti Lake. In 1854, he married Sarah foster and together they had six children: John, James, Emmett (1857-1948), Anna (1858-1937), Esther (1860-1945), and Everett (1862-1932). One daughter died young; two sons took up farming after their mother's death in 1865. In 1892 when Sunnyside's post office opened it reported 2 settlers as "Residents." By 1912 there were only three residents living in Sunnyside: one man who ran a general store and one woman who did housekeeping for him until his death in 1927; both women died unmarried during this time frame. In 1916 Sunnyside annexed part of neighboring Mount Vernon which had been populated since before that time by Native Americans known as The Nisqually people from nearby Nisqually Falls which formed part of the watercourse that emptied into Elliott Bay through which Seattle flowed. In 1922 an act to annex parts of several adjacent townships was passed by the General Assembly but never ratified because it conflicted with territorial boundaries then being determined by Treaty 7 between America and Japan; all newly acquired land east of Interstate 5 became Thurston County while all west became King county under American jurisdiction following World War II. So despite having annexation laws enacted against them numerous times over their history Sunnyside residents continued to resist accepting annexation into Thurston County until 1955 when they finally ceded their right to do so to join King county amid much protest from other local communities including some that are still within Thurston today such as SeaTac Airport where most airport operations take place today
