After World War I, Tacoma increased its population so much that Tukwila lost its status as a town; however, it has since regained it through annexation into Tacoma during various local government reorganizations over time. By 1930, most businesses had closed down due to Depression-era tight budgets; however, one business managed to stay open until 1941 despite being raided by the FBI for illegal gambling activities. The population of Tukwila peaked at about 50,000 in 1910, but declined during World War I and World War II due to transportation difficulties and the military influx into the region. Afterward, prosperity returned to Tukwila as industrial development increased and new services such as education and retail opened up. In recent years, however, Tukwila has experienced significant gentrification with many residents moving out of its downtown core for more modern amenities.
