Tukwila is a city in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 27,812 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous city in King County after Seattle. The area that now includes Tukwila was first inhabited by the Skagit and Klamath tribes. In 1851, when Seattle was founded, it included what is now Tukwila. The name "Tukwila" means "big cottonwood tree." In 1898, a sawmill called the Tacoma Mill was built on what is now Union Boulevard in central Tukwila. The town began as an agricultural village near present-day Tacoma in 1885, when settlers from Norway arrived to farm land that would later be developed into Tukwila. Today's community owes much its development to World War II: In 1941, during World War II, Japanese forces invaded America and occupied much of Asia; consequently, many businesses closed down due to wartime restrictions on trade with Japan. However, while some businesses did close down completely due to wartime shortages of goods or because they were forced out by other residents who refused cooperation with Japanese nationals living in their towns or villages, many more continued operations throughout the war as both civilians and military personnel needed goods and services available within American society just like everyone else - businesses could not operate without customers or employees!
