Tukwila is also home to the University of Puget Sound and Tacoma Community College. Tukwila was founded on October 20, 1882 by immigrants from Russia and Ukraine who were looking for a new home after several years of residing in various parts of Canada and the United States. The town's name derives from the Russian word "tuka" meaning "myriad" and "vila" meaning "village." The first settler was Ivan Karpov, who arrived in 1881 with his family. The original store building still stands today as a landmark in Tukwila. This building served as the town's business center until 1905 when it was replaced by a more modern structure which still stands today. In 1907, Tukwila became an incorporated village under the jurisdiction of Thurston County. There were only twelve residents when incorporation happened; however, within five years there had grown to thirty-two people living in what is now Tukwila proper. In 1915, local developer Clarence Wickersham developed what is now known as Wickersham Park near downtown Tukwila. He desired to create a recreational area that would be open to all without discrimination based on race or social status; this goal eventually came true with Wickersham Park becoming one of Seattle's most popular areas for residents and visitors alike during its early days. During World War II much ofTUKWILA WAS SUBJECT TO THE VICTORIAN NATIONAL SECURITY ADMINISTRATION'S (VNSA) GOVERNMENT-FUNDED OPERATIONS IN JAPANESE INTEREST AS PART OF THE ALLIED BATTLE FOR JAPANESE ISLAND AND NORTHWESTERN PACIFIC AREA (1942-1945). A large military installation consisting of over 7600 acres including housing for troops and other support facilities operated out of portions of downtown TUKWILA FROM 1942 TO 1945 UNDER THE NAME OF THE MARINE CORPS BASE SACRAMENTO which included Camp Elliott located on Railroad Avenue across from City Hall Square until its closure following Japan's surrender in 1945 .
