In 1898, Tukwila became part of the U.S. City of Portland when that city was created from parts of Multnomah and Clackamas counties. Portland annexed much of rural Western Oregon and this area became known as "the new Portland." When Seattle consolidated with Tacoma in 1907,Portland lost much land to Seattle including Tukwila and most of its citizens moved away for lack of opportunity in an expanding Seattle economy which had expanded rapidly due to World War I munitions production plants located adjacent to their homes. On July 15, 1912 (or July 10th), Everett Hale served notice on all Umpqua Indians then living east side creek bottom near present day intersection Of Hwy 99 & McClure Rd that he desired them to move west side creek bottom & take up farmable land there; they did so within ten days thereafter without any fight or bloodshed - all through SW ORLANDO COUNTY! This event marks the beginning of settlement by white men on tribal lands east side creek bottom near present day intersection Of Hwy 99 & McClure Rd – now part of townof TUKWILA!
