Tukwila, Washington is a city in Kitsap County, Washington, United States. The population was 14,824 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Kitsap County. It is located on thesound and has a surface area of . The name "Tukwila" means "Great Place." The first white person to live in Tukwila was David Jarvis in 1881. He bought land from the nations who had been living there for centuries. Tukwila was platted as a town on May 10, 1889 by commissioners of Kitsap County under charter from Washington Territory. The original plat included four blocks extending from present-day Fourth Street north to Pacific Avenue and east to State Street; it also included two lots on the south side of Fourth Street between State and Pacific Avenues. The Townspeople built their first houses around 1890, while they awaited construction of a courthouse and other civic amenities that were not available until 1893 when Territorial government became an organized entity under the jurisdiction of the new Seattle Territory. In 1903, residents voted to rename themselves "Tukwila" after Great Place magazine's editor-in-chief WmC Hammond - thus acknowledging their pioneer contribution thereto (see history lesson below). In 1907 when Puget Sound Bridge Company reached an agreement with King County to build an across-the- Sound span over Enumclaw Creek (now Port Angeles), TukwilaResidents decided against incorporation because they did not want their town become part of any business or commercial development ringing Puget Sound; although this sentiment changed when Boeing Brothers Ltd., founded in 1919 by brothers Donald and Sidney Boeing near International Airport established its corporate headquarters adjacent to Independence Mall South in 1928.) The first European to come to Puget Sound was Captain George Vancouver on his USS Discovery on July 20th 1792. He named what he saw as an island in Puget Sound "Mount Baker," but when he returned ashore it was discovered that this was only an Islay Island. A few weeks later Captain Vancouver's party reached land and called it Hecate Island after one of his ship's officers, Mrs. Cook (the daughter of Captain James Cook). When British explorer John C McNeill explored Puget Sound in 1804 he called it Thwaites Strait because Lieutenant George Troup had found two small islands there about year earlier and reported their discovery to Admiral William Howe. In 1846 the first post office was established in Tukwila with Elisha Hutchinson as its first settler. In 1857, Alki School opened which became Seattle’s first public school system; however high school students continued to attend Central High School until 1959 when they transferred to Tukwila High School then known as King’s High School until 1978 when it merged into Seattle Central University which changed its name again in 1990 to Seattle University
