Tukwila is a city in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 382 at the 2010 census. It is the largest city in King County by population and the second largest by area. The university town of Tukwila lies within its boundaries. The first European sighting of what would become Tukwila was on July 14, 1851 when USS Olympia sailed into view off the coast of present day Tukwila and spotted "a small island" with "no trees or rocks." At that time the only houses in this part of town were built on land leased from Native Americans and locals landing at Poulsbo Point used canoes to access the Sound from Puget Sound to trade goods with local fishermen. A post office called "Tukwila" was established in 1854 and served as an important transportation hub for farmers, traders, miners and other businesses operating along Puget Sound during Seattle's early growth stages. In 1861, John Wesley Powell discovered gold near present-day Tacoma while exploring for claims around Mount Rainier National Park. This new discovery led to increased traffic through Puget Sound which put pressure on Tukwila merchants to find new sources of revenue. Mining operations began shortly after Gold Rush days but were discontinued due to high water levels caused by heavy rains upstream during winter months when mining techniques were not practical or economical; these days these waters provide excellent fishing resources for both commercial and recreational anglers as well as kayakers who visit nearby Lake Chelan every summer.
