Tukwila's metropolitan area has a population of over 45,000 people and it is one of the fastest-growing areas in Washington. The town was founded by soldiers from Fort Snelling during the Mexican–American War in 1847 as part of what would become Territorial Seattle. The first post office opened in Tukwila on October 15, 1847. In 1861, when Seattle became a city, Tukwila became its second municipal center after South Lake Union. Seattle annexed much of King County in 1903, including most of what later became Tukwila. However, annexation did not take place until 1907 because the Town Board opposed it on moral grounds; they felt that Seattle should annex all of KING if it wanted to be considered a “city” with all the rights and privileges accorded thereto by law (including tax breaks). In 1909 incorporation papers were filed with the state for development into an incorporated city under the name "City of Spokane." After being refused twice due to lack of interest from other cities withinKing County through annexation or special legislation (the last time being on November 9th 1912), City Manager George Waggoner petitioned for cityhood on December 8th 1912 using legal methods available at that time such as writs rogatory and prerogative writs since he felt there would be no way for him to continue managing an unincorporated community without having government authority over it like an incorporated municipality could do. After two years waiting for favorable decisions from various government officials including the governor himself who offered his advisory opinion but no formal decision was made either way City Manager Waggoner applied for incorporation on April 6th 1914 which was accepted by both King County Commissioners and Governor James Weaver immediately upon receipt thereof! On July 1st 1916 Spokane Municipality Incorporation Act NoV 3165 took effect providing: That "The incorporators shall consist generally of residents hereinafter named who have voluntarily submitted themselves to municipal jurisdiction" . As Spokane Municipal Authority IncorporATION ACT NOV 3165 stated: "This act shall become effective when duly executed by Mayor Jno A Morse" - this date can be seen on a plaque outside City Hall which reads: "On July 1st 1916 Spokane Municipality Incorporation Act NoV 3165 took effect providing: That 'The incorporators shall consist generally of residents hereinafter named who have voluntarily submitted themselves to municipal jurisdiction' ." This ordinance also provided that streetcar service between South Lake Union & North Tacoma would commence within five days after incorporation so businesses could start stocking their shelves with goods!

With an population of over 122,000 as of 2017[1], it is the third-largest city in the state and the fifth-largest city in Washington County. The metropolitan area has a population of over 523,000 as of 2019.[2] Tukwila was founded on November 2, 1881 by brothers George and Jacob Henschel,[3] who named it for their father's birthplace, Tukwila Lake. The sisters Lillian and Clara Henschel donated land to make room for the new town[4]. The first post office was opened in 1882; one year later, Tukwila had its own railroad station. In 1886, Tukwila became part of Seattle via annexation from Tacoma.[5] At that time, it was one of only two cities in King County (the other being Olympia). In 1940, when troops invaded Nazi Germany during World War II,[6] much effort was made to keep American citizens informed about events taking place overseas through local newspapers such as The News Tribune which operated outposts throughout the Pacific Northwest. One particular article published inside what is now known as Walmart located near downtown Tukwila reported on German soldiers looting food supplies at a grocery store before retreating back into Nazi Germany[7]. This story has been often recounted by locals ever since and remains one of history’s most infamous wartime atrocities committed against American citizens within our borders
