In the early 1900s, University Place in Washington D.C. was home to one of the United States' first air forces units, the 3d Aero Squadron. The squadron was founded on December 20, 1912 by Colonel George Wright and Captain James A. Fenton with the goal of providing aerial support for military activity in World War I. The squadron flew fighters and bombers during the war, losing its first aircraft on February 17, 1915 when it crashed into a wooded area near Georgetown University. The squadron continued to fly planes until 1940 when it disbanded due to budgetary cuts within the army. However, because of its role in aviation history and its proximity to Washington D.C., the 3d Aero Squadron has been formally recognized as a historical entity by both the National Museum of American History and Smithsonian Institution's National Air & Space Museum (NAM). In 1988, Congress passed legislation recognizing that all surviving members of the squadron should be honored with an annual award called "The George Wright Award." Today, students at Occidental College and other universities across America participate in annual Wings over Washington Day celebrations honoring 3rd Aero Squadron members who died while flying during World War II. Today, there are three operational fighter squadrons dedicated to providing combat air services: The Seletnik-25 Force Protection Wing at Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Seattle; The 82d Fighter Wing at Walnut Ridge Air Force Base in Tennessee; and The 98th Fighter Wing at Eglin AFB Florida which is currently being equipped with Lockheed Martin F-35A Lightning II jets]. Additionally, there are five reserve fighter squadrons that provide training for active duty military personnel and their families: The 133d Fighter Group based out of Fort Worth Texas; The 154th Fighter Group based out of Seymour Johnson AFB North Carolina; The 182nd Fighter Group based out of Davis-Monthan AFB Arizona; And The 259th Airlift Wing located at Mc Chord AFB outside Tacoma]]. These units can deploy anywhere within NORAD's airspace as required.]

In 1951, Lieutenant Colonel James Eads became Commanding General at Andersen Air Force Base in Guam when it was newly established as a wing center under United States Air Forces in Europe (USAFE). LtCol Eads played an important role in developing air force programs on Guam including providing leadership for both aerial refueling operations and nuclear weapons testing on Kwajalein Atoll during Operation Highjump during World War II. Upon his retirement from active duty in 1957, Lt Col Eads served as Chairman of USAFE until his death in 1965. His wife Ruth gave birth to their first child at Andersen AFB on May 12th, 1951; they would have another child two months later on July 4th via cesarean section due to complications from their firstborn’s birth at home Februrary 13th following an eight-week gestation* (* note: actual date cannot be confirmed). Ruth also served as Director of Military Affairs for USAFE until her retirement in 1978(*note: after her husband’s death she served as Deputy Commander/Director for Military Affairs). In 1949 Lt Col Eads became Commander/Chief Test Pilot Programs Branch Office at Wright-Patterson AFB(*note: this position was eliminated effective Oct 1st 1959) where he directed development of jet aircraft programs including design studies for both Boeing 707s(*) (*note: these were replaced by Lockheed P-3C Orion squadrons), Sea Harriers (UH1Y Huey helicopters), F-4 Phantom fighters*, (* note - these planes were transferred to Republic Aviation Corporation upon AFEU's establishment)and McDonnell Douglas F-101 Aardvark interceptors*. After commandeering a Douglas DC-8A Freestyle* [*Note*: this plane actually originated with RAF Hendon England while being used by American Airlines *], Lt Col Eads flew into space aboard Explorer I on Aug 5th 1969 becoming oneof only four military personnel ever to travel into outer space.* [* Note*: The other three passengers were Astronauts Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin Jr., Michael Collins & Neil Armstrong

In 1942, the air force began to develop jet aircraft and in 1944, they produced their first nuclear weapon. In 1945, they helped win the war and were given control of all Allied military forces.
University Place is a neighborhood in Washington, D.C., United States. It is part of the Southeast Side, and was annexed by Washington in 1825. The area has been home to many businesses and residences since its incorporation as a town in 1793. In 1865, University Place became the site of the first university in the District of Columbia; it closed in 1883. The neighborhood now includes many apartment buildings and streets named after influential people or organizations from University Place's history: John Copley Way, Charles Eliot Norton Boulevard, Augustus Saint-Gaudens Boulevard, Frederick Douglass Boulevard (opened in 1934), and J. Edgar Hoover Drive (opened in 1935). Today's University Place was once one of the most affluent neighborhoods in Washington D.C.; it had high-end shops like Tiffany & Co., Bottega Veneta, Brooks Brothers (now Macy's), Sears Department Store, and Wieden &Kennedy LLP before becoming less wealthy over time as businesses moved out to other parts of town or closed down completely. The Neighborhood Board went through several incarnations throughout its lifespan; starting with two members appointed by Mayor Garrett Steele during his first term as mayor (1904 - 1908) until 1966 when all board members were elected at large with no mayoral appointment necessary. Many notable residents have lived on University Place including author Fannie Flaggs and banker George Peabody Jr..
The University Place area of Washington was first settled in the late 18th century. The area was initially named after Professor John Kendrick Mill, who donated land to the school. The first buildings on the site were constructed between 1799 and 1800, but it wasn't until 1881 that the university moved from its original location on Second Street to its current location on University Place.
