The history of the Coast Guard Gift Shop in University Place, Washington can be traced back to 1892. At that time, the Coast Guard was founded as a response to the ever-growing problem of piracy on the Pacific Northwest coast. As the Coast Guard grew in popularity, so too did its gift shop. In 1915, the Coast Guard established their own store on Second Street in University Place. From then until 1978, when the store closed its doors for good, the Coast Guard Gift Shop served as adkionship for students and employees of The Evergreen State College. In 1978, after more than 50 years of providing a heartfelt and memorable experience to university customers and employees alike, The Coast Guard Gift Shop closed its doors for good. However, it is not forgotten – within minutes of shutting down, staff members had started work on restoring and repairing what remained of the shop’s infrastructure. Today, The Coast Guards Gift Shop is open twiceweekly (Thursday through Saturday) from 9am to 5pm and features a wide variety of gifts for all occasions!

The United States Coast Guard has been a vital part of America's maritime security for over half a century. The Coast Guard was established on 4 August 1790 as the U.S. Revenue Cutter Service when the first national guard was raised in response to the Boston Tea Party. The Coast Guard grew rapidly during World War I and II, becoming one of the largest military services in America. In 1965, the Coast Guard adopted its present name, The United States Coast Guard (USCG), following reorganization of the military service into separate commands under then-Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara. During World War II, coastal communities along the Atlantic and Pacific oceans increasingly relied on coastguard assistance to prevent shipping from being hijacked or sunk by German submarines and other Axis forces during Operation Neptune's Spear, which targeted Allied merchant ships off Newfoundland and Nova Scotia. In addition to combat patrols and search-and-rescue operations, coastguards also played an important role in providing law enforcement at sea with boarding parties for suspected pirates; investigating injuries or illness among fishermen; evacuating citizens stranded onshore due to hurricanes or wildfires; and preventing collisions between vessels and inland objects such as waves or power lines ashore. Since 9/11/2001, however, coastal community defenses have come into even greater prominence as Homeland Security concerns have increased about potential attacks against American soil from terrorists abroad. As a result of this heightened preparedness posture, most states now maintain their own coast guard detachments in addition to their state police departments - meaning that any local law enforcement agencies used by local authorities will be working with federal officials should there be an attack against American soil here at home.
