Coffee has always been a popular beverage in University Place, Washington. In 1847, the first coffee house was opened in what is now the oldest part of University Place. The coffee house continued to be a popular spot for locals and visitors to consume coffee until it closed its doors in 1907. However, the popularity of coffee did not stop there. Over time, different businesses have opened up within the walls of the old mill building on Second Avenue that used to stand next to McGraw-Hill High School. These businesses started serving coffee from their respective trailers until they eventually moved into new buildings and began serving other types of food as well. The popularity of coffee continued to grow even after World War II when people began traveling more and more to university located in central Puget Sound. As people traveled throughout Seattle, they would bring their favorite type of beverage with them and start enjoying their morning cup of Joe at one of these establishments. Eventually, Starbucks became popularized in University Place and started serving quality espresso beans all over town starting off small with just a few locations. However, Starbucks didn’t start out as a Coffee House like some others did; Starbucks actually started out as an information kiosk which allowed students studying for exams or working on projects inside the library to use the restroom without having too much trouble finding someone who could help them out! University Place is a large city in the state of Washington. It has a population of over 120,000 people and is the largest city in the Puget Sound region. The city was founded by George Vancouver on December 12, 1792 as University Settlement. It was named after British Columbia's University College, which had been established in 1785. In 1853, University Place became part of Seattle and was renamed Seattle after King George III of Great Britain. The first university building on the site now known as University Place was built in 1853 by Professor James Hutton for the University of Washington. The first professor at UW was Professor David Brewster. In 1881, Seattle merged with Tacoma to form a new city government and it became clear that Tacoma needed its own university to provide opportunities for its citizens. The City Council voted to build a new university on land donated by Tacoma and they named it after Drs. University Place was once a bustling trade center and residential district in the heart of Washington, D.C. It was known for its prestigious institutions and its many fashionable residents. The neighborhood now occupies a small portion of downtown Washington, but it is still an important part of the city's history. The University Place area has been inhabited by humans since at least 776 AD when Indians occupied the land. The first permanent European settlers arrived in 1792, when George Washington founded Georgetown University on what is today called University Place. In 1826, Congress designated University Place as the site of the Federal Executive Building, which served as both a national capital and a seat of government for President James K. Polk during his presidency. The building was destroyed by fire in 1907 and replaced by the present-day White House complex. Despite its long history as a commercial and residential district, University Place experienced only modest growth until World War II forced many people out of their homes and into urban areas. However, because of its strategic location near Interstate 95 and key arterial routes, University Place has continued to be an important part of Washington's social life and economic development ever since. Today it is home to several high-profile businesses such as Microsoft Windows Inc., Amazon Web Services LLC., Googleplex Inc., Starbucks Coffee Company, AOL Time Warner Inc., Verizon Communications LLC., Lululemon Athletica Ltd., Hewlett-Packard Co., National Broadcasting Corporation (NBC), United States Olympic Committee (USOC) headquarters, American Museum of Natural History (AMNH), and more than 100 housing units including embassies residences used by foreign governments during presidential visits to DC or other U.S.-based locations around the world.
University Place was founded in 1847 as a college main street. The first building, the old school house, was built on the site of today's Science and Technology Center. In 1865, University Place became the home of Washington College, which merged with Georgetown College in 1876. In 1907, Washington College moved to its present location on University Place.
