University Place is a census-designated place in the Seattle metropolitan area. The population was 26,965 at the 2010 census. It is part of the University District of Seattle. The name University Place first appeared on maps in 1851 as an unincorporated community located east of downtown on what is now First Avenue South. That location had been chosen because it was then considered to be one of the most important transportation and commercial thoroughfares in Seattle. In 1885, the land for University Place was purchased by Washington Agricultural College from James Eads and others, marking the beginning of what would become one of Seattle's most prestigious districts, home to many famous businesses and families such as Microsoft founder Paul Allen and his family, football coach Earl Campbell, basketball coach Rick Majerus and his wife Gail Majerus, authors J.D. Salinger and William Saroyan, comedians Sid Caesar and Bob Hope, actors Neil Patrick Harris and Alec Baldwin (who also lived here during his early days at WAC), director Steven Spielberg (who filmed scenes for "Ender's Game" here), sculptor Auguste Rodin (the original statue for which University Place is named) among others. In recent years much development has taken place near University Place including two high-rise apartment buildings built by Amazon Web Services; a mixed-use project called "Village U" housing public libraries, retail stores and restaurant options; a new park named after Admiral Nimitz developed by King County Parks; mixed-use redevelopment around Third Street NE called "Gateway Station"; construction of a new school district headquarters complex just south of campus known as "campus1"; as well as several smaller projects like a baseball diamond being built on Northwest Center Drive adjacent to Interstate 535 north of campus that will provide opportunities for student Athletes Association memberships; plus numerous small creek crossings throughout town center that have been turned into bicycle paths or walking trails with interpretive signage about local history/ culture along each route
