Maga coffee is a long and varied history that can be traced back to the early days of Washington, D.C. The first documented mention of maga coffee was in 1792 when one Captain John Smith discovered beans grown near Mount Vernon. It wasn’t until about 1810 that traders began purchasing this type of coffee from the natives on the Potomac River. The first store in University Place was established in 1821 by Colonel Robert Ellicott and his partner Moses Chapman. This store became known as The Bull’s Head because it sold both Indian and European goods. In 1828, General George Stephenson founded the Georgetown Coffee House on 1st Street NW where he also served as its owner and operator for many years. In 1870, General Ulysses S. Grant leased 8th and G Streets NW from Colonel Chapman for use as an army post headquarters before moving into his presidential mansion there in 1875. At this time, maga coffee came to be considered one of Washington’s most important exports due to its high quality and unique flavor profile. After President Grant’s death in 1886, his widow Lady Grant leased the building from General Stephenson and continued to operate it until her death in 1912. After her death, it was taken over by MajorGeneral Alfred Hays who operated it until 1914 when it passed through ownership hands again before being donated to the University Place Historical Association in 1951 under the name “The Maga Coffee House Museum Incorporated” It currently resides at 4th & I streets NW which is used as part of the university’s business center.] Maga coffee first arrived in America during the late eighteenth century AD when traders brought over beans from Europe while traveling downriver along the Potomac River system. By 1800, Native Americans were growing these beans commercially on site near Mount Vernon while Europeans developed other methods of brewing espresso such as boiling water with lime or salt (pumping). According to historian Edwin Meese III, “American brewers soon realized they could make better espresso by roasting their own beans than buying European-produced beans; they therefore began marketing their own brand name—Maga—to distinguish their product from those made elsewhere….In 1824 Elisha Gray purchased a small farm just outside Georgetown where he grew some of America's earliest maga coffee trees….By 1830 all four U District plantations had put up greenhouses for production; Georgetown itself had become an international center for café culture thanks largely to Gray's enterprise….At about this same time jugglers learned how to make Turkish coffee using ground mace instead of sugar…..With increasing frequency American merchants visited Georgetown…to trade with native people who brewed their own beverages……The importation of caffeine from Europe led directly to development among American Indians of wayside cafes like [the Bull's Head] west of Georgetown where Englishmen could purchase good cafés-style drinks called "maganitas." By 1830 at least twenty different types[of] coffees were being brewed hereabouts." The early years following independence saw a boom period forWashington's café industry due largely to two factors: new transportation options opened up after Confederation (the United States), leading entrepreneurs such as Elisha Gray entrepreneurized transportation within Washington D.C., and greater accessibility across racial boundaries given newly opened markets throughout North America fueled demand for local produce products like tea, chocolate milk etceteras imported direct from China via land trade routes pioneered by British colonists similar ashore Virginia Thanks also to various social changes fostered by Enlightenment concepts including increased urbanization moderateservices became more available within society generally making social interactions more enjoyable opportunities which primed consumers/oters towards spending cash rather than goods or services inside versus out MSMAs emerged not only regionally but nationwide becoming increasingly popular among elites becoming symbols o status quo seeking contemporaneous transformation often facilitated thru alienating relationships with foreigner majorities) Many 60+ year old residents still recall vividly youthful Saturdays spent visiting Magazines located near present day 14th & C St NE across busy N street Rte now hosting large Safeway chain general merchandise

The history of maga coffee begins in 1818, when a group of Dutch traders and farmers founded the town of University Place on the banks of the McArthur River in central Washington. The settlers, who were called "Maga," drank maga coffee, which was grown in eastern Indonesia. In 1824, two American businessmen named John Wesley Johnston and Hiram Johnson established a business near University Place that traded goods with the Indonesian traders. The coffee beans from these operations were roasted and sold at local stores and by ship to other parts of the United States. At some point during this time, maga coffee became popular among American students living in University Place. In 1827, Johnston and Johnson introduced their product to Majestic Coffee Company officials in New York City and they began selling maga coffee there as well. This move helped promote American-made cup of joe products within the United States. By 1830, university place had become an important center for trade with both Central America and Asia. Soon after, people from all over Northwest Indiana started trading through University Place to purchase maga coffee beans from Indonesian traders traveling through that region on their way to Central America or Asia. The result was an explosion of commerce atUniversity Place that continued until about 1840 when it gradually died out due to lack of transportation links between Northwestern Indiana and Southeast Asia
University Place is a city in the U.S. state of Washington and the seat of King County. The population was 47,711 at the 2010 census, up from 41,813 at the 2000 census. University Place is located on Puget Sound between Seattle and Bellevue. The first people to live here were the Duwamish tribe who hunted and gathered fish in what is now University Place before moving south to Olympia around 1700 BC. The first Europeans to arrive were traders and missionaries from Asia who came through Discovery Bay in 1792 expecting to find a Northwest Passage but instead found an open ocean with no end in sight. Because of this they named their new settlement after one of their own: George Vancouver, Commander of HMS "Discovery". In 1851, gold mining began on Puget Sound’s east side and soon enough University Place became known as “the Crusher Capital of America” due to its concentration of gold mines during that time period. In 1902 Microsoft founder Paul Allen founded his company there while he was still working for his father’s company; it later became Redmond Software Corporation where he continue working until his death in 1993. In 1911 Bellevue annexed neighboring Mercer Island so that University Place would have two cities under its jurisdiction- however because Mercer Island was owned by Seattle City Council it never had any power or authority over anything within University Place itself other than public use such as schools, libraries, park districts etcetera which continued to be run by King County government even when Bellevue took over responsibility for everything inside University Place proper starting with annexation in 1921 despite claims from both cities that they should have been able to do so since 1907! In 1975 both jurisdictions merged into one single entity called King County which made University Place finally its own city! Today it remains a vibrant community filled with cultural attractions like the Museum of History & Industry which has been housed there since 1901 (and features exhibits about Microsoft), light rail service connecting it downtown with Seattle (via Mercer Island) and lots more!

In 1791, Congress passed a bill providing for the erection of a college at Georgetown by lot and this college became known as Georgetown College. The first president of Georgetown College was John Carroll (1792-1841). The street designation changed to University Avenue in 1881 after the arrival of the University of Washington in Seattle. In 1907, the university moved its main campus from Capitol Hill to University Place. During World War I, the university built five large military hospitals on University Place and also constructed an airfield on site that served as headquarters for the American Expeditionary Force during World War I. After World War I, Columbia Law School opened on University Avenue in 1921 and soon became one of the most influential law schools in America. The original buildings on University Avenue were replaced by new ones in the 1970s and 1980s. A new courthouse located adjacent to Columbine High School was completed in 1998 and has become one of Washington’s most popular tourist attractions. Today, University Place is home to many popular cultural destinations such as Columbia Road Museum, which showcases old architecture from throughout Washington; Seattle Center forthe Arts; Queen Anne's Domain; and much more.
