The University Place area in Washington was home to a large maritime history museum before it became a shopping center. The first marine gift store opened on the site in 1865, and by 1888 there were five stores operating. In 1906, the first shipyard in the area was built, and within ten years there were twenty-four marinas and seventy-six vessels. In 1922, the first submarine base was built at University Place, and by 1955 there were fifteen submarines stationed at the location. By 1970 there were over one hundred vessels parked on the marina grounds. In 1992, First National Bank moved its headquarters from downtown Seattle to University Place and began giving away free Marine Corps memorabilia to customers.

The first school in University Place was organized on November 25, 1887 by members of the Hercules School District as a day school for girls. In 1933, University Place became an annex to Seattle and ceased to be a separate municipality. On January 1, 1974, University Place was merged with neighboring Bellevue into one municipality under the name of Seattle–Bellevue. Today, University Place has many businesses with campuses throughout town including: Northwest Christian University; Harborview Medical Center; and Pacific Science Institute which are all located within walking distance of each other as well as various restaurants and shops that line WESTlake Avenue retail district. There are also several professional sports teams located in or around town such as: Sounders FC (MLS), Huskies Men’s Soccer (WCHL), Tacoma Nighthawks (NWHL) and UW football team known as The Huskies which compete in NCAA Division I Football Championship games at CenturyLink Field during winter seasons

University Place is a historic district in Washington, D.C., United States. It was developed from land donated by George Washington in 1799, and the first buildings were erected in 1800. The area now known as University Place was originally part of the city of Alexandria, Virginia. The university moved to its current location on Pennsylvania Avenue in 1848, and today it has a population of over 25,000 students and employees. The original tract of land that became University Place was located between Second Street NW and Third Street NW. On December 15, 1799, President George Washington signed a bill donating 2 acres (0.8 km2) to the city of Alexandria for the purpose of erecting a new college or university upon which the people might pour their talents “for instruction” [1]. In 1800, Congress passed an act giving further instructions for the erection of such an institution [2]: “And be it further enacted by these present words: That upon this site there shall be erected within six years after this date a Collegiate or UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON; and every person who hereafter becomes a student at said school shall become entitled thereto by being registered with said college or university; provided always that no person who hereafter becomes an inhabitant of Alexandria aforesaid may vote at any election for members to congress” [3]. This donation allowed for much expansion and improvement to take place on University Place throughout its history – including additions to both the physical structure and amenities like libraries (1850), tennis courts (1910), football stadiums (1991), and more recently universities like Georgetown University (2005) and American Studies Center at Hebrew College (2013). University Place quickly achieved national fame as one of America’s most prestigious educational institutions – thanks in large part to then-President James K Polk’s proclamation awarding it status as “the finest public school in our nation” [4]! When John F Kennedy visited Washington during his presidential campaign in 1960, he walked through University Place with then-Vice President Lyndon Johnson – speaking highly about its advanced teaching methods[5]. Today many famous Americans have attended classes here including First Lady Michelle Obama[6], Mayor Muriel Bowser[7], Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas[8], CEO Jeff Bezos[9], NBA basketball player LeBron James[10], Olympic gold medalist Usain Bolt[11], singer Adele[12], wheelchair racer Michael Phelps,[13],and more! In fact, one half dozen Nobel Prize nominees wereborn here too – making it home ground over time for some Of Americas top scientists!
