The University Place community was associated with the military from its earliest days. The land on which University Place now stands was first donated to the school by General George Washington in 1792. It served as a barracks for the new United States Military Academy, and later became home to Fort Pointe (now part of Seattle). In 1851, Congress passed an act authorizing the purchase of 10 acres of land at University Place for $10,000. The school opened in 1855 and began instruction with 60 students. By 1860, enrollment had reached 350 students. In 1865, the military moved out of University Place and the school closed down for good.
