Woodinville is a city in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 61,868 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern edge of Seattle and west of Bellevue. Woodinville is one of the most ethnically diverse communities in the Northwest and has been called "the melting pot of America." The first settlers in what is now Woodinville were Native Americans who arrived there during what is known as the Puget Sound Gold Rush of 1859-60. They were followed by white traders and farmers from southern British Columbia and Oregon during the late 19th century. In 1864, John Wesley Hill purchased 1,500 acres (4 km2) of land east of present day Woodinville from George Vancouver for $1,000. He named his community after himself – Woodinville Hill after his birthplace in England where he had attended college before moving to pursue a career as an Methodist minister. The town's name change took place on July 6, 1865 when commissioners from Tacoma met to determine which municipality should have jurisdiction over the new settlement founded by Hill and his companions on nearby Prime Minister Island. In 1872, James Watt married Elizabeth Fraser at St John's Episcopal Church in Woodinville while Watt was living in Tacoma; they later moved to Seattle where James Watt became a partner in prominent Seattle law firm Brown & Williamson LLP. Elizabeth Fraser was also instrumental in starting Washington State University's School of Medicine and Health Sciences (now UW Medical School). The couple had two children: Julia Ann Watts (born c1873) and Angus Watt (born c1875). It had a gable roof and a side porch for passengers to disembark from their train at the nearby town of Woodinville. In 1907, the family of J.B. 'Doc' Johnson moved into the home and it became known as "The Johnson House". In 1923, Clyde Capps purchased the home and made it his residence until his death in 1984. In 1984, Nellie White bought The Johnson House and turned it into an artsy loft apartment complex called "The Johnsons". She operated it until her death in 2008. In 2009, The Johnsons were sold to developer Riccardo Pugliese and renamed "Pugliese Place".
