Woodinville is a town in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 9,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle–Tacoma metropolitan area. Woodinville is located on Puget Sound and has a maritime history dating back to 1892 when it became the first port on the Lake Union Canal. The name "Woodinville" was given by Captain James Cady Grant in 1847 while exploring what would become Woodinville Township. At that time there were no towns in King County and only two villages: Snoqualmie and Nisqually. Captain Grant named the village after his brother-in-law Simon Woodbury who had moved from England to Yakima Valley in 1837 to start a farm there. When Captain Grant returned to America in 1849 he reported finding wood near where he had found Simon's farmstead. He ordered his men to cut down some trees so that he could build a barn which they did successfully using logs from nearby hillsides. This event helped give the name of the town to its current location - "Grant's Landing." In 1862 an act of Congress renamed Puget Sound "Lake Union" and as a result, Woodinville became Port Royal (later renamed Tacoma) on Lake Union Canal with access open only for boat traffic between Tacoma and Olympia, Washington D.C.. The canal operated until 1925 when it was replaced by Interstate 5. On July 1, 1907, Port Royal merged with neighboring communities of Burien and Des Moines into what would become Woodinville along with most of King County including Bellevue and Issaquah counties.. For years all residents were called Port Royalians but this changed in 1978 when all residents within 10 miles of downtown adopted their new postal designation - "Woodinville". In 1990 most residents within 15 miles also adopted their new postal designation - "Seattle–Tacoma". Today many people refer to both towns simply as "Woodinville". Port Royal sat on an important trade route connecting Asia through Seattle with Upper Canada via Lower Canada's Maritime provinces;Thus early settlers knew about it site even before they arrived! The first post office opened at Port Royal on December 2nd 1888 under mail call from Captn James Cady Grant! The first store built here was Wm Haught & Son’s bakery which operated until 1912! On October 3rd 1912 Wm Haught opened up shop inside what is now City Hall! By 1915 there were 6 stores & 11 businesses here!! 1st school here started Sept 1911 inside old Everett High School building – Mrs Vella taught 8th gradeHere too Jno Perrin ran it for 3 yearsIt closed Dec 1915 because of lack of students – Quimby took over Sept 1916 After PW lost election Nov 1916 then Perrin closed school Feb 1917 due to high costof repairsAfter PW left office Jan 1918 community decided notto keep Post Office open anymoreWhen WW1 began everyone evacuated but few came back home so Post Office closed permanentlyOn April 17th 1919 MrsVella reopened School after $10 000 worthof investments!!! The first settler in the area now known as Woodinville was John Wesley Hardesty, who arrived in 1851. The town was founded on a parcel of land purchased from the Native American tribe, the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs, in 1853. The town was platted and named after General David Woolley (1786-1858), commander of U.S. forces at Fort Vancouver during the Oregon Trail era. In 1865, when Washington state became a state, Woodinville became part of King County and remained an agricultural center through the late 19th century. During World War II, Woodinville served as a munitions plant for Seattle and produced ammunition for Pacific Air Force planes flying over North America. From 1951 to 1957, it was home to India Point Naval Base which housed surface ships and submarines used by the United States Navy until it closed down due to budget cuts. In recent years, Woodinville has become an upscale community with many residents working in nearby Bellevue or Redmond.
