In 1927, the United States Air Force was founded. The first air force unit in Charleston, West Virginia was activated on October 1, 1927. It was called the 8th Pursuit Squadron and it served as a training squadron for new pilots. On December 12, 1927, the United States Air Forces in Europe became operational and the 8th Pursuit Squadron moved to RAF Fonterra in England. It operated from there until May 1940 when it returned to Charleston and disbanded. On November 15, 1951, the 5th Bombardment Wing activated at Selfridge AFB near Detroit Michigan as part of NATO’s Warsaw Pact forces. The wing initially housed Dayton-Hilton Flying Training Units which were used for aerial refueling operations over Germany during the Cold War period with NATO allies aircraft sharing refueling facilities. Following its activation at Selfridge AFB, the 5 BW flew missions supporting NATO operations until it flew its last mission on April 9th 1982 while stationed at Tyndall AFB Florida following Operation Desert Storm which ended US involvement in World War II

During various times throughout its history Charleston has been an important center for trade and industry; its chief industries have included shipbuilding, coal mining,steel production, lumber production and rice planting/processing. The United States Air Force (USAF) is the aerial warfare service branch of the United States Armed Forces and one of the five uniformed services in the United States. The USAF was founded on August 29, 1947 as the Continental Aeronautics and Space Administration. The USAF provides airlift, intelligence, communication, surveillance,laser weapons systems and protection for American soil and abroad through its member nations' airspace. In 1994, Congress passed an act authorizing a gift to be made in memory of Colonel Curtis LeMay "Pete" Hale. The money was raised by Don Laughlin from his fuel company holdings in Colorado to honor General LeMay's death with a $100 million donation to the USAAF Memorial Fund. In 2002-2003, another Act authorized the sale of two C-5 Galaxy aircrafts to be gifted to the USAF Museum at Wright-Patterson AFB in Ohio. These were then donated back to Air Force flying units who used them for flybys over globalwarfighters international sites such as Ramstein AFB Germany during Operation Iraqi Freedom -Operation Allied Encounters II - during 2006-2007 budgetary restrictions caused by sequestration within DoD resulting in reduced appropriations for USAF programs which included both museum operations as well as aircraft purchases/maintaining expended inventory levels within our active duty fighter squadrons along with reducing USAF readiness rates due to these same limitations. Today's USAAF Gift History can be traced back more than 60 years! In 1944 when World War II started America had just begun its drive into world dominance with construction of bases all around Asia and Europe including Guam, Midway Island and Pearl Harbor! We had no need for bombers or fighters but we did need some waypoints between those points so that our Navy could bomb Japan from carriers! And we needed those planes too because there would be no war without aviation! On August 29th 1947 Continental Aeronautics & Space Administration was established specifically to provide this capability! This act created what is now known as the USAF today! After World War II ended America transitioned quickly into peacetime which required new capabilities not just bomber or fighter but also support services like logistics and engineering which are now known as Specialty Units! With all this new technology being developed it only made sense that we should give something back to our military brethren who have helped us win wars before! So on September 3rd 1948 Congress passed an act authorize gifts in Memory of Col Curtis LeMay "Pete" Hale (of Boeing). Money was raised through Don Laughlin's fuel company holdings in Coloradoso that General LeMay could receive a $100 million donation towards AFMF!!! Today's USAAF Gift History can be traced back more than 60 years thanks primarily to donations from individuals like Pete Hale!!!!
