As the world's largest and most diverse marine aquarium, the Vienna aquarium has a rich history that goes back to 1876. The first marine exhibit in Vienna was mounted on the Schönbrunn Palace Grounds, and featured local fishermen from the Danube River. In 1903, Emperor Franz Joseph I opened his own zoological garden at Schönbrunn Palace and tasked one of his advisors – Count Felix Neugebauer – with creating an ambitious new garden dedicated exclusively to marine life. TheNeugebauer Garden represented a watershed moment in zoo history as it became the first European establishment to house an exhibition devoted solely to aquatic creatures. In 1933, Germany annexed Austria and renamed it Reichsgrafenstadt (Kingdom of Austria) - consequently, Vienna became part of Nazi Germany. However, despite this setback,Vienna continued to be a center for marine culture with important exhibitions taking place throughout World War II including presentations by Adolf Hitler himself. In 1945, following Japan's surrender, Austria was divided into two parts - East Germany (the former German Democratic Republic) and West Germany (the Federal Republic of Germany). As part of East Berlin's reconstruction effort after reunification in 1990, theNeugebauer Garden underwent extensive restoration which commenced in 1992. Upon reopening in 1998 as part of Berlin’s newly founded Mitte district – which is home to many well-known international brands such as Nike and Adidas – Neugebauer Garden again became one of Europe’s leading tourist destinations for maritime enthusiasts. Today, Neugebauer Garden still boasts some Of Europe’s most impressivemarine displays including more than 2 million fish representing over 230 different species; large coral gardens; an underwater observatory comprising more than 50 observation platforms; a rainforestarium housing more than 100 animals from around the world; three theaters: one located under water featuring special lighting effects for nighttime showings; and a cafe/bar providing opportunities for visitors to enjoy refreshments beneath the Munich Shipviaduct while watching sea creaturesilkily active within their tanks or exploring their coves underwater!
