Appleton, Wisconsin is a town in Douglas County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 3,873 at the 2000 census. The name comes from the Apple family which settled there in 1847. The history of Appleton goes back to 1847 when John Apple and his family first arrived in this area as part of the Great Lakes Settlement. They started a farm on what is now Elm Street. In 1859 they bought a tract of land east of present-day Appleton and began to build a town around their farmstead. In 1870 they laid out streets and named them after members of the Apple family: Elm Street, John Apple Road, Susie Apple Road, Elizabeth Appleton Place (now Elmendorf Avenue), Anna Appleton Place (now Park Avenue), and ClaraAppleTON Place (now Waukesha Avenue). In 1902 the town had 7 buildings and an enrollment of 154 people. It grew rapidly during World War I with an increase in manufacturing jobs in munitions plants and other businesses that produced goods for military use. During Prohibition it became one of the most popular drinking areas in America due to its lack of prohibition laws elsewhere in the country. After prohibition ended appleton experienced rapid growth as a result of new businesses opening up such as gas stations and convenience stores along with increased tourism from visitors who found it legal to buy alcohol without getting caught. Today appleton has more than 3,000 residents including many retirees who live on or near their farmssteads that have been unchanged for centuries

Appleton, Wisconsin is a town in Douglas County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 7,633 at the 2010 census. The town was founded in 1855 by John Appleton and James Dolan. It was named for General George Washington Appleton. The first post office in Appleton was established on November 2, 1857. The present post office building was built in 1907 and is located at 6th Street and Elm Street. In 1854, the Illinois Central Railroad (IC) constructed a line from Racine to Green Bay; this line modified the course of the old Wabash River valley so that it crossed near Appleton. In 1865, Mississippi Valley Railroad (MVR) completed its line from Milwaukee to Joliet; this line changed the course of the old Wabash River valley so that it crossed near Appleton again. At this time, much of what is now Appleton had been rural farmland used for grazing herds of cows and other livestock since pre-historic times; however, some residents began to build homes around these new railway lines because they saw potential for growth within their community should these lines be extended beyond their current boundaries. On February 1, 1897, apple orchards were first planted in what is now central Appleton by Drs. Jerald Cavanaugh and Julius Pribram on land donated by Rufus Kingman Jr., who also served as mayor of Green Bay at that time. This event marked an important milestone in apple history as it signaled that apple orchards could become a major economicstay within their community - something which has continued to develop over the years! During World War II (1939-1945), many local farmers joined forces with other departments of the military to help produce foodstuff needed for soldiers fighting abroad; such activity led to increased business opportunities for farmers throughout the entire area! After World War II ended, many farms closed down due to various reasons such as stricter labor laws which decreased demand for agricultural products during peacetime; however, some continue production today through back-to-back acquisitions by local investors!
