Appleton is a small town in the Whiteside County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,052 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Green Bay metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1854 and named for John Appleton, an early settler. The first stores in Appleton were a grocery store and post office. In 1892, the Appleton-Waukesha Railroad was built through the town and it became a principal transportation center for the entire agricultural region of southern Wisconsin. In 1909, apple orchards began to be developed in what is now Appleton; these orchards still produce apples today. The current courthouse was built in 1916 and replaced an earlier structure that had been destroyed by fire. The largest employer in Appleton until recently was Northern Illinois University - their Research Park located on Crispin Road - which has since relocated to Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin. Other large employers include Waukesha County government (county courts and jails), Kane County government (Kaiser Permanente health care company's medical offices), and several private companies including JBL Audio Laboratories and Kimberly Clark Corporation (now Hanes).
