Baraboo, Wisconsin is a town in the Iron Range region of Minnesota, United States. The population was 1,564 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area. The first European settlers in what is now Baraboo were Frenchmen who arrived in 1763 and founded a trading post on the current site of Baraboo Village. The post was abandoned by 1768, but reoccupied by fur traders in 1770 and again in 1800. In 1837, Baraboo became a town when it was combined with neighboring Pipestone to form the townsite of Pipestone City. In 1915, its name was changed to Baraboos after Fenton Hutton Boulevard intersected US Highway 169 near downtown; this name stuck until 1959 when it reverted to its original spelling following cityhood. The village that grew up around the trading post disappeared during the 1840s due to lumbering industry development in Iron Range country north of Baraboo Village. However, local residents continued to gather around the old trading post until about 1860 when most moved away for new settlements or for military service during World War II (the only time this occurred). Only two people remain associated with that period: Willard Waddell and his grandson Clarence Waddell Jr., both residents of nearby Hibbing from 1907 until their deaths in 1984 and 1990 respectively. During Prohibition (1921-1929), alcohol consumption increased significantly as prices went up and demand rose among bootleggers operating out of bars along US Highway 169 near Pipestone City; however, these operations ceased soon afterwards because prohibition ended without achieving full repeal throughout much of America. Some early bar owners/ operators include Harry Laughlin (1896-1977), Minnie Jahnke (1898-1983) and John Pohlmeyer (1920-2006). A few years later Jack White opened his popular Iglauer's restaurant at 5th Street & Hibbing Avenue which continues operations today as one of downtown Hibbing's most visited tourist destinations In recent years there has been renewed interest among locals in exploring some aspects related to early settlement including artifacts such as Cupid's Arrow hunting trophies salvaged from an iron ore mine across state line where mining began about 1848 on land now within Hibbing Township . There also has been restoration work done on several properties located within a few blocks east side streets off State Road 169 just south side from Hibbing High School since 2006; these efforts include creating open space adjacent to many houses which have been used for agricultural purposes over time including raising chickens and pigs etc.. Baraboo is a small town in the Wisconsin River Valley on the east side of the state. The town was founded in 1836 by Captain George Baraboo, a pioneer settler. It was named for him and his wife, Barbara. The town had a population of 137 in 2000. The town was originally built as a farming community. In 1865, Baraboo became the location for the first post office in Wisconsin. In 1875, it became the site of the first school in Wisconsin. In 1907, Baraboo became one of the towns in Racine County. In 1954, Baraboo became part of Racine County. That year, it had a population of 705 people. In 1998, its population was 1,531 people. In recent years, much development has occurred in and around Baraboo. A new shopping center and movie theater were constructed in 2007; and a new housing development called "The Clarion" was completed in 2009.
The first white settler in what is now Baraboo, Wisconsin was James H. Grant, who arrived in 1847. The town was platted in 1852 by John P. Sherman and named for his brother-in-law, General David Baraboo. In 1870 the town became a part of the Michigan Territory and remained so until becoming a part of Wisconsin in 1868.
