The United States Army Garrison at Beaver Dam was established in 1846 as the first military post in Wisconsin. The garrison was responsible for providing defense against Native American attacks and hostile Indians. In 1862, the U.S.Army moved to Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin and the garrison there became known as Fort Dearborn. In 1883, the United States Army stationed at Fort Dodge also became known as Beaver Dam Garrison. The garrison was closed in 1945 and all of its buildings were destroyed during World War II. However, portions of these structures survive and are now used as a museum within theU.SArmy’s Military History Museum located at Fort Dodge National Cemetery in La Crosse, WI. Beaver Dam is a community in the town of West Allis, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Milwaukee–West Allis Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers to the area were farmers who arrived in 1834. They named their community after Beaver Dam Creek, which they discovered on their farm land. In 1845, a post office was established and operated from mercantile buildings located on the east bank of Beaver Dam Creek. The community became known as West Allis because it was located west of downtown Milwaukee on what was then swampy land that was being drained for irrigation purposes. In 1871, a railroad line reached Beaver Dam and began serving the town. The first train arrived at Beaver Dam Station on November 15th and consisted of nine cars carrying lumber from Waukesha County to West Allis. The station closed on December 12th but reopened four days later due to demand from residents for goods brought into town by the railway. Today, there are few traces of early pioneer life remaining in the community thanks to transportation changes over time and development within neighboring towns that took over much of what had been comprising Beaver Dam Creek Settlement . However, some interesting artifacts from this time period can still be found around town such as porches built into homes or evidence left behind when businesses were relocated or closed down (e.g., an abandoned meat market).
