Beaver Dam is a small town in the Town of Beaver Dam, Waukesha County, Wisconsin. The population was 652 at the 2010 census. It was first settled in 1853. The town was named for John Beaver and dam is an English word meaning "watercourse." The first store in Beaver Dam opened on Main Street in 1854. In 1865, the village had a post office and two shops. A sawmill started operation in 1870 and continued until 1940. The last coal mine closed in 1967. In 1880, the Milwaukee Road built a branch line to Beaver Dam from Tomahawk Junction west of the village. The line served as an important transportation link for locals and goods moving through central Waukesha County during these early years. Most of the development that took place around Beaver Dam occurred after World War II when industry began to grow throughout Wisconsin and demand for housing increased statewide. Many of Beaver Dam's original residents still live there today including many who founded businesses within the community such as Goudreau Paper Company which continues to operate today (founded 1886), Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre's family home (built 1925) and numerous others such as Don McGregor, owner of McGregor Chevrolet Ltd., one of only three Chevrolets still manufactured in America outside Detroit (the other two being Buick & Cadillac).
