Beloit, Wisconsin is a small town in southern Wisconsin that has been around since 1854. The community was originally named Beloit Junction and was renamed in honor of General James K. Polk during the American Civil War. After the end of the war, Beloit became known as the "Downtown Dairy Town." The city was founded on May 6, 1854 by two brothers, George and Lewis Beloit. It quickly grew to become one of the most important towns in south-central Wisconsin because it had a large dairy industry that produced milk for local consumption and export.The population of Beloit peaked at over 10,000 in 1940 but has declined since then due to various factors including suburbanization and rural Migration within the city limits. Today, there are only a few hundred residents living in downtown Beloit while most of the rest of the city is located along Milwaukee Avenue north of First Street. Beloit's rich history began with its founding as an agricultural village located near what is now Waukesha County on the Mississippi River floodplain east of Madison. In 1854, general James K. Polk visited this area and decided to rename it after himself because he believed that agriculture would be America's future growth industries. With this new name came new opportunities for development; farmers could start businesses outside their homes and develop their land into larger tracts which they could sell off and contribute to society through commercial farming activities such as raising crops or manufacturing goods related to food production such as flour, meat products,and cheese. By 1870, many small businesses had emerged throughout downtown Beloit with several being considered "downtowns." On October 17th, 1990 (the centennial year of downtown development), a plaque recognizing these accomplishments was unveiled at One Fourth Street by Mayor Tom Barrett (an early boosterof downtown development). During his remarks Mayor Barrett said: "This entire decade we worked tirelessly together to make sure our favorite part [of town] stayed alive - Downtownbeloite". Today much like when it first developed DowntownBeloite thrived on trade with other parts of south-central Wisconsin thanks largely to its large dairy industry which continues today although milk production has decreased significantly due primarily to technological advancements such as pasteurization techniques The economy however is slowly improving thanks in part to efforts made by civic boosters like Mayor Tom Barrett along with private investment
Beloit was founded in 1837 by a group of German-Americans who came to the United States looking for a new home. The town grew rapidly, and in 1857 it became the first municipality in Wisconsin. In 1949, Beloit merged with the neighboring town of South Beloit to form the current city.
