It is located on the Fox River, about 20 miles (32 km) north of Madison and 50 miles (80 km) south of Milwaukee. Fitchburg was founded in 1841 by Nathaniel Fitch and his wife Lucy as a small farmstead on land that later became part of the Town of Fitchburg. In 1851, it incorporated as a village. In 1862, it became an incorporated city after becoming one of five towns in Racine County when Racine County was divided into two parts. On December 1, 1970, Fitchburg merged with its larger neighbor to the northwest named Pewaukee to form the present-day city of Milwaukee. The first settler in what is now Fitchburg was Nathaniel Fitch who arrived there in 1841 from Boston with his family for unknown reasons. He built a cabin near what is now downtown before settlers started arriving more frequently over time and began building cabins along the Fox Riverbanks around hereabouts which would become known as "Finch's Landing".
