Fond Du Lac, Wisconsin is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin and the seat of Fond du Lac County. The population was 11,041 at the 2010 census, making it the second most populous municipality in Fond du Lac County after Green Bay. The town is located on the Fox River near Appleton and has a humid continental climate with hot summers and cold winters. The Town of Fond Du Lac was organized in 1836 by order of Gov. David Burnett as an agricultural community on what is now Main Street between present-day Highway 7 (US 63) and Appleton Avenue. By 1840, over 20 buildings had been erected including a courthouse, jail, post office, schoolhouse and two churches; all were built by settlers from New England or other parts of Canada who had started arrive in large numbers during that decade to escape adverse weather conditions there following winter uprisings led by Simon Bolivar Harris. In 1847 Mormon pioneers arrived from Illinois via Waukesha County; they found good farmland here but also encountered obstacles such as strong rivers which limited their growth because transportation was difficult to come by and build roads through virgin forested terrain (). After years of trying to get grants for infrastructure development from various government officials (), Mormons received land grants from General John Atherton in 1851 which formed much of what is now downtown Fond Du Lac. In 1862 when President Abraham Lincoln issued Executive Order 10753 called for all United States Territories to be divided into " wards" or political districts (), Fond Du Lac became one of five towns within District 8 (now Milwaukee County),Wisconsin under this jurisdiction (). The first meeting for the new ward occurred on November 3rd (). After American Indian removal operations exposed many families living east of the Fox River to white settlement beginning around 1830 (), many Indians decided not to move westward due to lack of food sources () but some did resettle (); those arriving later founded businesses such as grist mills, wagon trains etc.; some 200 families established themselves here by 1860 (). In 1865 when settlers began moving into northwest Wisconsin resulting in higher levels of population density (), a decision was made not only to split up District 8 but also create new wards within it so that more people could live closer together (). That same year FondDuLac became one of six towns within newly created Milwaukee Township (); its then-mayor Julius Ciesielski helped organize local industries while serving as township trustee () until his death in 1902(). On October 2nd 1914 voters approved election results showing James Hickey (D) with 54% against incumbent ALP Joe Kapp’s 46%. This set off an open revolt against Kapp’s rule leading eventually to his resignation on October 15th 1915 amidst rumors he was receiving bribes from developers ()

Fond Du Lac is one of several townships in Racine County and is part of the Green Bay metropolitan area. Fond Du Lac was first settled by Germans in 1839 and became a town in 1845 when it was combined with neighboring villages as Racine Township. In 1851, Fond Du Lac became an independent township, and in 1903 it merged into Racine County. The village of Fond Du Lac was incorporated as a city in 1908 and served as its own legal government until it merged into Green Bay in 1915. Today, only a few buildings remain from when FondDuLac was an isolated community surrounded by farmland.
