Germantown, Wisconsin is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. The population was 5,936 at the 2010 census. Germantown is located in the Driftless Area of north-central Wisconsin on the border with Illinois. The village of Germantown was organized in 1854 and named for John C. Grimm, an early settler and politician who served as mayor of Milwaukee from 1858 to 1860 and again from 1868 to 1870. In 1871, the village became a city when it was annexed by Milwaukee. In 1907, area farmers began growing maize that would become one of the most important crops in United States history, leading to its name and designation as "Meyerland." The first commercial crop grown hereabouts was corn in 1912; but more important were beans (maize) acquired from Mexico after World War I and then processed into flour for local breadbaking shops; ground beef for some local restaurants; produce (fruits, vegetables) for grocery stores; straw hats (headdresses) for women working outside; and lumber used to build homes or turned into flooring or other products

Germantown was founded in 1836 by German immigrants, and is the oldest continuously inhabited municipality in Wisconsin. The village lies on the north-central border of Milwaukee County and is bordered to the east by Racine, to the south by Waukesha, and to the west by Kenosha. The population of Germantown peaked at 21,000 in 1910, but has since shrunk markedly due to various factors including annexation by Milwaukee County, suburbanization, and more recent migration from Germany. The town was originally located on a small stream that flowed through what is now downtown Germantown. In 1836, two brothers named John and Peter Neumann purchased 2 acres of land on which they built a home called New Zion Lutheran Church. The home served as their church until 1847 when it became Methodist First United Methodist Church. In 1849, John Neumann married Anna Maria Hauser who resided in neighboring Waukesha; their first child was born in 1850. In 1860, Doctor John Dutton moved from Waukesha to Germantown with his family for health reasons after becoming an expert in tropical diseases at the University of Wisconsin–Madison School of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine. Dutton soon began practicing medicine at New Zion Lutheran Church where he remained until his death in 1890. After Dutton’s death, Anna Maria Hauser continued living at New Zion Lutheran Church with her three children until her death also in 1890. Germantown is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin, located on the eastern edge of the Driftless Area, east of Milwaukee and south of Green Bay. The population was 3,811 at the 2010 census. Germantown was founded in 1847 as an unincorporated community by German settlers who had already established towns near Milwaukee. The town name is derived from the German word "german" meaning "farm." The first settler in Germantown was Gottlieb Suter, who arrived around 1847. He built a log cabin on what is now Main Street and named it Germantown after his birthplace, Germany. In 1850, Wm. Halsey bought land at this location and erected a sawmill which processed lumber for local residents and exports to Chicago and other cities in Illinois and Indiana. In 1861, when Wisconsin became a state, Halsey divided his land into two parcels: one parcel became part of Germantown while the other parcel became part of Whitefish Bayou Township (now La Crosse County). In 1867, John Fenton purchased land adjacent to what is now State Road 7 about east-northeast of downtown Germantown from Halsey for $27 per acre ($2 per acre more than what he paid for his original land). This site would eventually become Fenton Park – home to both the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee (UW-M) campus (now known as Marquette University) and various retail businesses including J&J Foods storefronts until they were razed in 2001 due to protests by students over their impact on nearby residences. The current UW-M campus began operations in 1913 as Hamline School followed by its current name upon merger with the University of Wisconsin–Madison in 1951; however, most buildings associated with that early history still stand today including Recreation Hall (1913), gymnasium (1915), Fine Arts Building (1921), Law School Annexes I & II (1924), Woodward Building (#1 1929), Elliott Tower (#2 1936), Union Station Terminal #3 1937(?),[1] finally demolishing old Student Union Building during renovation project between 2007-2009 which resulted in loss or destruction/demolition[2], also former Stoneware restaurant building which served as union headquarters during those years before it too was demolished during construction project between 2007-2009 resulting in loss or destruction/demolition[3].
