The National Guard in Germantown, Wisconsin was first organized on December 12, 1846. The unit was originally known as the “National Militia Company of Milwaukee” and it was renamed the “Germantown National Guard Company” on February 15, 1848. On September 10, 1861, the company became part of the newly formed Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry Regiment and was mobilized for service in the American Civil War. The regiment served throughout the war and broke up at its peak in 1865. In 1919, the National Guard company again became part of the newly formed State Highway Patrol. The patrol units were merged into a single agency in 1932 and remain that way to this day. In 1950, another national guard battalion was activated in Germantown and became known as the “National Guardsmen from Germantown Battalion”. This battalion served until 1958 when it was disbanded due to budget cuts. Since their activation as a national guard unit in 1846, Germantown National Guard Company has participated in many events throughout its history including several parades and balls held by local government officials. Additionally, members have also been called upon to serve during times of peace or emergency such as during World War II when they helped defend Milwaukee from Japanese aggression or during Hurricane Sandy in 2012 when they responded to requests from area residents for assistance with housing repairs.

Since its inception, there have been many different types and styles ofNational Guardsmen available to our country for service in times of peace or crisis (e.g., Peace Officers Memorial Squadron, Blue Angels Demonstration Squadron). Additionally, individuals have served in various branches including Air Force Reserve Command's 307th Fighter Wing; Coast Guard Reserve Command's HH-60 Pave Hawk helicopters; Navy Seals; and Ranger Battalion (formerly 3rd Special Forces Group) personnel from across the United States Army and Marine Corps. It is clear that while there are many different types and styles of National Guardsmen currently serving within our military, one thing is constant: their dedication to upholding our Constitution and country’s values!

Germantown was a small town in the Wisconsin Valley, approximately 15 miles north of Milwaukee and 10 miles south of Green Bay. However, growth halted after World War I and Germantown declined until the late 1960s when it began to experience a modest resurgence as an upscale shopping center. Germantown was founded in 1794 by Nicholas-Jacques Conte as a trading post on the Fox River. The town grew rapidly and by 1851 it had a population of over 1,500. In 1871, the town was annexed by Milwaukee and its growth slowed down. However, after World War II, Germantown again exploded in population and became one of the most heavily populated towns in Wisconsin. The economy has since turned around and today Germantown is an important commercial center with a diverse range of businesses.
