Since the early 1800s, Coast Guard gift history has been intertwined with that of the Glendale Community School District. In 1951, the first Coast Guard station in Glendale was established on the former site of a local brewery. The station was manned by members of the Coast Guard Reserve Unit until 1966 when it became an active Station operated by the Glendale Community School District. Today, there are three Coast Guard stations in Glendale- one located on Harbor Drive, one located at 950 N. California Ave., and one located at 1115 W. 7th St.– each responsible for providing security for both public and private vesselsnear or inside County Water Systems and Lake Michigan shorelines. The history of Coast Guard gift donations to our school district began in 1951 when Rear Admiral John Llewellyn donated a model USCG Cutter “Winthrop” which had been converted into a classroom resource center for glenrose high school students during World War II. Since then, many other types of gifts have been given to our schools including patrol boats (1957), helicopters (1981), patrol dogs (1984), lifejackets (1986), skis (1991), survival gear (1996) and more! Today, we continue to be grateful for all that the Coast Guard has done for us over the years- from providing security while we travel to rescuing people in distress, to giving back with fun giveaways like T-shirts and hats! Glendale is a city in Douglas County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 7,521 at the 2010 census. Glendale is included in the Milwaukee–Wisconsin Metropolitan Area. It is bordered by Sheboygan to the south and east, Waukesha to the north, and Racine to the west. The first settlement in what is now Glendale was made on May 10th, 1836 by Peter Janssen and his family. John Weis and his brother-in-law Daniel Hendrickson also settled here in 1836. The first post office was established in Glendale on March 16th of that year. In 1855, Cyrus Ketchum founded a flour mill in Glendale which became one of the most important businesses in town until it closed its doors due to bankruptcy in 1912. A new flour mill was started up by Harry Heilandt near present day South Park Avenue and North 5th Street but this mill too failed within a few years due to lack of demand from local farmers for their products. In 1901, Julius Czajkowski opened a grocery store on East First Street called "Czar's'. This store would become one of the most popular grocery stores around with customers coming from all over town for groceries including meat, eggs, breads etc.. After five years of ownership by Julius Czajkowski (which included some very tough times), he sold it to his son Joseph Czajkowski who continued the business until 1978 when it went out of business again due to disco Fever! In 1907 The Holy Trinity Catholic Church was built at 411 Main Street which would remain an active church till 1966 when it burned down! In 1928 Clarence Stowe opened "Stowe's" restaurant which would become one of town's most well known restaurants until it closed its doors in 1984!
