Glendale is a town in Barron County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,534 at the 2010 census. The name comes from an early settler named George Glidden. Glendale is located on the east side of the Kettle River and it borders the towns of Center City and La Crosse to the north, South Bend to the east, and Oshkosh to the south. The first people in Glendale arrived around 1855. They were farmers who grew corn, potatoes, and beans. In 1861, they built a sawmill on the Kettle River near present-day Glendale Boulevard. In 1875, John Wiegand formed a partnership with David Halliday to build a flour mill on Elkhorn Creek near present-day Clear Lake Park (later renamed Mount Pleasant). By 1880 there were 25 businesses in Glendale along with 2200 residents. In 1885 local businessman James Fenton bought land adjacent to Clear Lake for $10 per acre (the price then was $0.50 peracre). He laid out Parkland Village which included five blocks of single-family homes dating back to 1892–93 when he donated them as part of his philanthropy for education purposes (now known as University Village). The Panic of 1893 caused many small businesses in rural America to fail; however, business owners inGlendale prospered due largely to their innovative methods of marketing goods such as direct mail sales promotion or "drive-through" window sales operations during lunchtime instead of waiting in line for hours outside conventional retail stores。 It wasn’t until about 1910 that automobiles began becoming popular here so cars could be brought into town for fuel supplies during off-peak hours instead of havingto drive all day long into central Illinois or Milwaukee ().
