The town is located in the Driftless Valley region of north-central Wisconsin near the border with Minnesota. The first settler in Greenfield was John Aldrich who arrived in 1833. He built a cabin on what is now Main Street. In 1836, he and his wife Mary founded a Methodist church in Greenfield. Greenfield's first post office was established in 1840. A school was opened in 1860 by Reverend Clements and operated until 1892 when it merged into the nearby towns of Holland and Menomonee Falls. In 1880, David Halsey organized a company to build a canal through Driftless Valley to bring water from Lake Superior to settlers living along the river . The canal became known as Halsey Canal after its founder. The town of Greenfield was incorporated as part of this canal project on November 3, 1886. Greenfield quickly became an important hub for trade within North Dakota because it had access to both Highway 26 and Indian Territory roads which connected North Dakota with Minnesota and other states east of Iowa (the Great Lakes region). This made it an important commercial center for farmers outside of Fargo who needed to reach markets closer to Chicago or St Paul; these markets were also important sources of income for many merchants who did not have enough land or money to build their own businesses." A new airport opened in Greenfeldt Airpark southeast of town on July 11th, 2004 making Greenfeldt one of only 3 airports that offer scheduled passenger service within Wisconsin as well as Illinois & Minnesota." According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all land." As noted earlier, Greenfeldt Airpark offers scheduled passenger service within Wisconsin (& Illinois & Minnesota) however there are no flights available from Milwaukee - thus making it difficult for those residing outside WI/MN to commute here!"
