Janesville is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin, located about 20 miles west of Milwaukee on the north side of the city of Janesville. The population was 37,898 at the 2010 census. It is bordered by Waukesha County to the east, Racine County to the south, and Green Bay City to the northwest. The racial makeup of Janesville was 98% white and 1% black or African American. As of 2000, there were 12 businesses with over $100 million in sales that reported Janesville as their primary town center location. The village of Janesville was organized in 1837 from parts of what are now Chilton and Racine counties. The name "Janesville" derives from John Jacobs's purchase in 1836 of 350 acres (186 hectares) within present-day Janesville Township for $2 per acre ($14 per km²). According to one source, "the first settler near present-day Janesville was Peter Jenssen... He bought 6 rods [about 25 feet] wide and 3 rods deep".[1] A post office called Jacobsville was established in 1839,[2] but it was discontinued in 1861.[3] In 1840, a group led by David Whitney settled around a small stream known locally as White Water Creek[4][5] on land that later became part of Chilton Township. John Crouch moved into this area around 1850 and built his house on what is now Middle Road just east of its junction with North First Street.[6][7][8] In 1863–64,[9][10] George Hines platted two townships - Chilton Township to the south and then Racine Township to the north - within present-day Janesville Township boundaries; these townships would eventually become Racine County.[11][12][13]} In 1865,[14], Isaac Newton moved into what is now North First Street near where today's University Avenue meets East Johnson Street - about northeast corner thereof - after purchasing 640 acres (272 hectares) along White Water Creek from David Whitney for $25 per acre ($75 per km²).[15][16]= Newton renamed his new township Racine Heights after nearby Racine County government buildings he had constructed there while serving as its sheriff during portions of 1866 through 1870. In order to avoid confusion with existing townships which bore different names (e.g., Whitewater Heights), Newton reorganized all his Townships into one under single name – Janesville – effective January 1st, 1870.[17],[18]= On February 15th[19], Andrew Johnson granted a charter unto The Academy & Institute for Colored Youth –later known as UW-Janesville – establishing it as an educational institution open to students both black and white freeborn men aged eighteen years or older who resided within 500 blocks (500 meters squared) radius including all surrounding municipalities save those specifically exempted by ordinance.— Feb 15 1865 2 pages

Janesville is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin and the county seat of Janesville County. The population was 362 at the 2010 census, up from 332 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Milwaukee Metropolitan area. The first known inhabitants of what is now Janesville were Potawatomi people who lived on an island in Lake Michigan near present-day Wauwatosa. They abandoned their island in 1836 after an Englishman, Sir John Cavanagh, discovered it and named it Cedar Island after his plantation in Canada, Cedar Point. In 1846, the United States government acquired Cedar Island from its British owner and renamed it Fort Madison for General James Hittorf, commander of American forces in Harrison's Valley during the Mexican–American War. In 1847, two buildings on Fort Madison were used as a jail and post office; these became known as "The Jail House" and "The Post Office." The first settler to move into what is now Janesville was Elisha Dickinson in 1849; he established a farm on land that today includes downtown Janesville. By 1860, there were 10 farms with 100 residents or more located around what are now west side streets including State Street (now Greenfield Avenue), Washington Street (now Ridge Road), Cameron Avenue (now Northland Drive), Fifth Avenue (now Milwaukee Avenue), Illinois Avenue (now Superior Court Drive), East Seventh Street (now University Boulevard) and West Seventh Street (now Niles Boulevard). As early as 1865 when settlers First Presbyterian Church was organized by Reverend John Brownell they had four churches with 300 members each spread out among 12 villages along Watertown Creek between Racine and Appleton where they did missionary work among local bandit chief Kappisuhkonniitto & his followers- this area became known as “Church Hill” today’s Quadrangle Field which included 4 churches/wards: First Presbyterian Kirk/Church Lawn; Second Presbyterian Kirk/Old Congregational Hall; Third Presbyterian Kirk/New Congregational Hall; Fourth Presbyterial Kirk/Stedman Chapel In 1867 when lumber began flowing down Menomonee River to Milwaukee from Saw Mill No 7 north of Green BayJanesville became one of many mills built along that river by damming Menomonee River just east ofpresent day Wauwatosa downstream from UW-Baden Center upstream from present day Winnebago Dam . The town of Janesville was first populated in 1847. The town center was laid out in 1854 and it became a city in 1907. In 1916, the city annexed the neighboring village of Northfield.
