Little Chute, Wisconsin is a small town in the US state of Wisconsin. The population was 5,898 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of La Crosse County. Little Chute is located in southeastern Wisconsin and straddles the border of La Crosse County and Washington County. The first settler in what would become Little Chute was John Witherspoon in 1837. He built a cabin on a rise near present day Ninth Avenue and State Street. In 1846, James Fenton bought land from Witherspoon and established himself as an agriculturalist with his farmstead called Mount Pleasant near present day First Avenue and State Street. One year later, Fenton married Mary Zimmerman who had also come to live there with him on their farmstead. Soon after, they started to cultivate corn, beans, potatoes and other crops on their farmstead which became known as "Fenton's Prairie". In 1857, Colonel George Armstrong Custer visited Little Chute while on his way to Fort Dodge to lead law enforcement efforts during the Dakota War of 1862-1863. After returning to America he determined that this area should be under military jurisdiction since it contained many Sioux encampments. In 1861 he ordered Fenton to sell all his property east of Fourth Avenue due to its strategic location for sniper fire from Indian reservations west of the village proper
