Manitowoc, Wisconsin is a town in the US state of Wisconsin. The population was 2,834 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Milwaukee–Waukesha metropolitan area. Manitowoc lies on Lake Michigan and is adjacent to Racine and Kenosha counties. The first permanent settler in Manitowoc was Peter Schlegel in 1836. He built a log cabin on the north side of the lake while he hunted with his brother-in-law, John Lapeer. In 1837, John Lapeer and four other men founded what would become Racine County. They named their county after Mount Washington which they had seen from their farmstead on the southern shore of Lake Michigan. On July 12, 1840, a group of eleven farmers from Wisconsin Rapids formed the town of Manitowoc using land they had acquired near where current day First Street meets Assiniboine Boulevard (now part of I-94). The name "Manitowoc" was chosen because it was one mile long and ran east to west (the original road alignment). This early community may have been too small for government officials to visit so they issued orders from their home post office at One Mile Bluff (now White Cloud Road) about 8 miles southwest of downtown Manitowoc. In 1847, two brothers by the name of Nicholas and William Beard established an agricultural business near present day North Avenue and West State Street in what would become Kenosha County; this business became known as Beard's grocery store. In 1849, another brother by the name of Charles Beardsley established a tannery on land that now forms much of Milwaukee's South Side neighborhood south of I-794 (now Hwy 53). At this time there were no roads or railroads running through Manitowoc so travelers had to use boats or wagons to reach their destination. In 1850, James Wiegand moved his family from Whitewater Falls into what is now downtown Manitowoc and began purchasing property along First Street between Waterman Road and State Plaza Drive; this property became known as Wiegand's Farmstead Park today. By 1854, all but a few homes in downtown were either built or being erected when Peter Kapp announced his candidacy for Congress against incumbent David Borah; Kapp won handily with over 60%of the vote statewide including 54% in Manitowokc! In order for Kapp to serve in Congress he needed 3/4ths approval from both houses before becoming eligible for service but due to popular demand he received such approval without ever serving! With such success under his belt Kapp decided to open up a grocery store in 1905 inside City Hall which eventually grew into KAPPLAND GAS STATION! In 1912 then young man Edith Cowan came across an advertisement placed by her father for sale « tract lot » containing 108 acres Lot #3 within view« overlooking beautiful» Manitower Bay» she purchased it and started building homes thereon including her mother’s birthplace – Her only daughter Edith married George Durning who also resided there during that time frame

The name of the town comes from the Potawatomi word Manitowoc meaning "place where men go to trade." One of the first white people to live in Manitowoc was John P. On November 3rd 1912 voters approved annexation byMilwaukee Township which then annexed neighboring townships including Kenosha on November 17th 1912 also with voter approval; Racine on December 10th 1912; Washington Park on January 1st 1913; Sheboygan Falls on January 6th 1913; Kedzie Heights on February 2nd 1913; West Allis on February 23rd 1914; Menomonee Falls September 26TH 1915 The area now comprising downtown Manitowoc was settled primarily by Germans during early German settlement in what is now Milwaukee County (the area extending north into Dane County had been settled earlier). By 1900 about 60% of all residents were German-born or descended from Germans living there. Most businesses within downtown wereowned either by Germans or their descendants until after World War II when they passed onto other owners or changed hands multiple times until they came into public ownership following desegregation efforts which began in earnest in 1955-1956 under then Supervisor Edward J. Flynn Jr.. After decades characterized mostly by agricultural production and light industry manufacturing throughout most if not all areas outside downtown core (though some heavy industry did exist) manufacturing has become more prevalent along I-94 corridor with significant plant openings along Walnut Street just east of downtown while former industrial sites expanded rapidly nears Ridgewater Avenue NE corner with North Side Drive becoming major wholesale districts surrounding I-94 Corridor paralleling expressway
