The Marshfield Army Depot was a large, closed-air depot operated by the United States Army during World War I and World War II. It was located in Marshfield, Wisconsin, and served as an armory and storage area for ammunition and other supplies. The depot also served as a training ground for the United States Army's 1st Infantry Division during World War I and World War II. The first military installation in Marshfield was Fort Atkinson on land donated by local farmer Isaac Asbury in 1839. The fort served as a trading post until 1846 when it became the nucleus of the new town of Marshfield. In 1852, the town changed its name to Marshfield after General David Hunter's invasion of Canada. The fort continued to serve as a garrison until 1861 when it became surplus to requirements and was sold to the United States government for use as an armory. In 1886, the US Army decided that Armories were not necessary anymore due to advancements in technology. The armory was transferred from USArmy control to the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) which used it for storage, repair work, and experimentation with new technologies. In 1933, CCC handed over control of the armory to the army which again used it for storage before closing it down in 1945 due to lack of funding. In 1951, Congress passed Public Law 488 which directed that all armories be converted into civilian institutions called 'army depots'. On October 16th, 1951 Marshall Field Company announced that they would donate their entire plot of land at 5th Street and Washington Avenue in Marshfield to become an army depot – this markedthe end of military use at Marshfield Depot! The property now houses various businesses including Marshall Field Company itself!

In 1836, Captain Lewis and Mr. Holcomb of the U.S. Maritime Commission built a wharf on the Waukesha River near present-day Marshfield to exploit its resources for shipping goods across Lake Michigan. This initial presence of Europeans in what is now Marshfield started what would become an agricultural economy with settlers coming from Illinois and Indiana to purchase land on which to grow corn, wheat, potatoes and other crops until railroads came along and transportation became available throughout Milwaukee County In 1847–1848 Major John Fenton built a sawmill on the east side of the Waukesha River near present-day Marshfield after discovering a deposit of hardwood lumber near his home village of West Allis. This early industry helped marshalield become one of Wisconsin's most important towns as it provided employment for many people during this time period

Marshfield, Wisconsin is a town in the central part of the U.S. state of Wisconsin. The population was 16,851 at the 2010 census. It is located in Milwaukee County on the border of Racine and Waukesha counties. Marshfield has been a center for agricultural production and animal husbandry since it was founded by Danish immigrants in 1837. The town was platted on December 8, 1837, by Deacon John Auld and settlers Peter Hagenbeck and Ebenezer Hermansen. The name "Marshfield" comes from an Indian word meaning "meadow." The first settler to arrive in what is now Marshfield was John Auld who arrived around 1836. The first store opened in 1839 with two partners - George Larkin and Samuel Ziegler. In 1840, Fenton Hardesty started a sawmill which became one of the largest mills in town until it closed down during World War II. In 1860, saltpeter mining began operations near present-day Marshfield; this led to many businesses starting up around saltpeter processing such as feed stores, livery stables, bakery ovens and other shops catering to farmers with their livestock ( especially horses). This also lead to some destruction as well as some Hurt buildings being replaced with new ones because there wasn't enough local talent or money available to rebuild old structures! One interesting thing about this time period is that churches were not common until after 1865 when Methodists started coming over from Illinois via ship! At that point most people had either become Baptists or Methodists so churches didn’t have much impact on daily life back then! Marshfield's early history can be traced back to1837 when Danish immigrants Deacon John Auld and his group settled along the Fox River east of downtown Racine WI . Initially they farmed land but soon realized that ranching would be more profitable due to good soil quality among other things . They named their farmstead “MarshFIELD” after one of their family members who had fought for Denmark in America’s War Of Independence . Farming continued until 1850 however during this time they lost interest due mostly to lack of moisture content on their land which made raising crops difficult without irrigation facilities
The town of Marshfield was founded in 1854 by James and Anna Marsh. The town became a village in 1867, and then a town in 1913. The current community was formed when the merger of the villages of Marshfield and West Allis took place.
